About Food Science Technology
Food science and technology can be simply defined as the study of food, from how it is made to the potential impacts it has on our everyday lives.
The subject is fairly recent to study at grade level, although the study of food and how to do it has been taught for hundreds of years.
The course educates students not only about food production, as was the case hundreds of years ago, but also about the impact nutrition can have on health and lifestyle.
Recently, there has been a significant change in society’s attitudes towards food and nutrition. This is partly a result of the high obesity scale. Government agencies are now experts in food and nutrition to promote a healthy lifestyle for future generations.
The entry requirements for a food science and technology course contrast from one university to another. However, most establishments offering a degree course wait for a minimum of 3 A-levels, or their equivalent, before granting you admission.
At the graduate level, students should have a strong degree and some work experience to support their application. They must also demonstrate a passion for the subject.
Most university courses in Food Science and Technology have a study duration of 3 to 4 years, depending on whether or not students opt for a job placement between the second and third stages of the study program.
Graduate qualifications mostly last a minimum of one year.
