The awards will be evaluated through the submission of an essay and students all around the world are encouraged to apply for the prestigious competition for the academic year of 2023-2024.

The Human Rights Essay Awards is one of the competitive awards offered by the American University Washington College of Law and is offered annually to enhance the production of the academic world related to international human rights law.

Regardless of your nationality, the Essay Award will be open to all lawyers all around the world!

Eligible Participants 

Before proceeding with the application process, the students must meet the eligibility for the award.

  • The Essay Awards is open to all lawyers regardless of nationality.
  • The participants must be a law degree J.D. Juris Doctor, a bachelor’s degree in Law, or an equivalently the due date of submission.
  • Must be able to demonstrate their interest and experience in international human rights law.
  • Must be flexible to choose the subject in the essay topic.
  • The essay must be in an academic article with a proper citation.

Application Process

There is no application needed for the Essay Awards, if you are an eligible student you can start your essay and submit it before the deadline for submission.

In the Essay Awards Portal, the applicants must complete the basic information needed to complete the form.

Note: Winning essays – in English and in Spanish-will distributed to The American University International Law Survey (AUILR). The AUILR is a significant diary with pertinent academic material, which gets roughly 1,500 entries yearly and distributes an extensive variety of legal scholarship from teachers, judges, rehearsing lawyers, and eminent legal thinkers.

Rules for the Essay Award

The Foundation on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the American University Washington School of Law is glad to demand the accommodation of essays for the Human Rights Essay Award (HREA). Beneficiaries will be picked by the accompanying guidelines:

  • The applicants must be holding a law degree and can demonstrate their interest in human rights.
  • The past winners are not eligible to apply.
  • To apply for the HREA, candidates should pick a subject relating to the point picked by the Foundation for every specific year.
