For the academic year 2023-2024, two Ph.D. students from South Africa will be awarded for the AHRI/UCL Ph.D. Studentship Award which covers the student’s educational fees, travels cost, and living allowance at the UCL Division of Infection and Immunity.

The Institute for Worldwide Health changes lives across the world. They work in this present reality, collaborating with networks for solutions. As an Institute they execute a cross-disciplinary initiative to give innovative, serviceable answers for worldwide health issues which are reflected through their research and teaching. About the UCL/AHRI MSc Scholarship

This scholarship is a singular honor for the UK scholastic year from September 2023 to September 2024. It is subsidized by UCL’s Worldwide Commitment Office. The scholarship is administered through Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) and is for candidates whose academic foundation and interests are lined up with the projects of research at the Africa Health Research Institute.

The opportunity is available to candidates who are a citizen of South Africa. Candidates should have a top-notch academic record to be considered for the studentship award. Candidates will go through a serious round of determination at AHRI and the fruitful candidate will be nominated to go through to the UCL choice. Application for acknowledgment onto an MSc showed course is discrete, and the Africa Health Research Institute nominee will be directed through this cycle.

The proposed Ph.D. research should be in the field of Medical Sciences and/or Global Health Studie. This covers everything from single atoms through to cells and tissues to entire creatures and organisms and human populaces for work on human health and wellbeing around the world.

Students will be supposed to invest the vast majority of their energy in South Africa, conducting their research journey at AHRI. While in London, students will be supposed to go to seminars, postgraduate club meetings, and other UCL doctoral students’ occasions.

Scholarship Eligibility 

Before proceeding with the application, interested applicants must meet the following eligibility to be considered for the scholarship:

  • The applicants must be domiciled in South Africa at the time of their application.
  • Must be holding a letter of recommendation from the proposed supervisor of UCL.
  • Must be working in Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) or holding a letter of support stating the completion of their Ph.D. at AHRI.
  • Must be able to stay in London for a minimum of one year during their Ph.D. research studies. The time can be divided into two periods of six months.
  • Ph.D. women are also encouraged to apply.

Application Process

To apply for the scholarship, eligible students can start their application in an online portal provided by the university. The applicants must be able to complete their application form including their personal and contact details.

Keep in mind that successful students will be expected to participate in the public announcement of the award. This includes the publication of their photos and interviews.

Scholarship Awards 

The Ph.D. Studentship Awards will be providing the following:

  • All education fees for up to three years of Ph.D. Degree at the UCL.
  • Two roundtrip airfares from South Africa to the United Kingdom.
  • Support for Living costs for up to one year in London.
  • UCL Bench Fees
  • Durban Living costs for up to two years.
