The Shawn Carter Foundation was established in 2003 as a 501c3 public charity (“Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund”) by Shawn Carter and his mother, Gloria Carter.

How much is the Shawn Carter scholarship?

All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by performing community service and serving as a mentor to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars.

By doing this, each Shawn Carter Scholar will receive between $1,500 and $2,500 a year.

Applicants may reapply each year.

The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.

Shawn Carter Scholarship Eligibility

  • All high school seniors, students with GED diplomas, undergraduate college students (year 2 or year 4), and students in trade or vocational schools who meet the requirements below are eligible.
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Must be 25 years old or younger
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0

DO I HAVE TO CURRENTLY ENROLL IN SCHOOL TO APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP?

You do not have to be currently enrolled in school to apply, but you must show evidence from an accredited institution that you will enroll and that the scholarship support you seek will apply there.

MY SCHOOL DOES NOT USE A 4.0 GRADE SCALE, HOW CAN I CONVERT MY GRADES INTO THIS SCALE?

I DO NOT HAVE A VERY HIGH GPA, DO I HAVE A CHANCE TO RECEIVE THIS SCHOLARSHIP?

Yes, we take into account many factors when determining your scholarship application. Leadership, community service, socioeconomic factors, the quality of your essay, and other strengths are taken into account in the decision-making process.
Our typical scholarship recipients demonstrate resilience in the face of hardship, give back to their communities, and have a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0. Students with GPAs above this range are still encouraged to apply.
