Annually Canon Foundation offers Research Fellowships for international students pursuing higher education in a research journey in one of Japan’s most technological countries. Canon Foundation offers three Fellowships and aims to encourage outstanding students in selected countries for the academic year 2024-2025.

The Research Fellowship

Canon Foundation in Europe will be awarding 15 Fellowships to outstanding researchers in European countries and Japan. The European researchers are expected to pursue their research journey in Japan whereas Japanese researchers are expected to pursue their research journey in Europe. Canon Research Fellowship will be held for a minimum period of 3 months to a maximum of 12 months or one year.

The foundation will be supporting all fields of research and there will be no restrictions or limitations, as long as the candidate will meet the eligibility of the fellowship awards. The same research program will be given to qualified Japanese researchers who will commence their research in Europe. The Cannon Research Fellowship will be applied in an agreement on the partnership and research plan that has been discussed with the guest researcher and the eligible/partnered institution.

Research Fellowship Eligibility

Before proceeding with the application, interested applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Fellowship program:

  • All citizens in Europe are encouraged to apply which also includes the United Kingdom, Israel, Turkey, Balkan, and Baltic Countries.
  • The candidates must have held a master’s degree or Ph.D. degree within the past ten years.
  • The fellowship will also consider applicants who have obtained a qualification of more than ten years as long as they can provide the necessary supporting information on their application.
  • Keep in mind that this fellowship will prioritize the applicants who are willing to embark on their research journey in Europe and Japan and a first time traveller in the said countries.

Application Process

  • The application deadline for this fellowship program will be on September 15, 2023.
  • The application start dates will be January to December 2024.
  • The final decision made by the Selection Committee will be emailed by mid-December 2023.
  • No correspondence regarding individual application decisions
  • No negative inference from the non-securing of Fellowship
  • Priority to applicants traveling to Europe or Japan, rather than extending current stay
  • The application can be completed in an online platform at the official website of the Canon Foundation.
  • As part of the application process, additional materials will be required.

The success rate wil be approximately 10% and the funding decisions will be based on the research plan quality of the applicants, reference letter, and host confirmation. Gender, age, and nationality will have no impact on the fellowship success rate.

The Research Fellowship Award

  • Stipend: Up to 30,000 Euros/year for Research Fellows, adjustable based on period
  • Usage options: Flexible grant use for living, travel, research, insurance, books, etc.
  • No limitations on grant allocation

The Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships 

This fellowship is in collaboration with the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Over the decades the Canon Foundation in Europe and the European University Institute have partnered to create an annual Canon Foundation Fellowship which caters to the post-doctoral research journey at the university.

Under this initiative, a Japanese national or an individual holding permanent residency in Japan will have the opportunity to conduct post-doctoral research in Florence, Italy. Important information regarding research domains can be acquired through the European University Institute’s official website. The chosen candidate will actively engage in the esteemed Max Weber program.

Eligibility for the Co-Sponsored Research Fellowships 

Before proceeding with the application, the students must meet the eligibility criteria of the fellowship program.

  • The fellowship is designed to attract early-career applicants pursuing their post-doctoral research.
  • The fellowship is open to all research domains at the European University Institute.
  • The applicants must successfully defend their doctoral degree by the fellowship commencement by September 1.
  • Candidates from Japan or permanent residents of Japan are eligible to apply.

There will be an extension for the career interruptions which will be allowed such as:

  • Maternity leaves
  • Illness

Upon submitting the application, the candidates must include an explanation of such circumstances.

  • Monthly stipend of €2,070 per month

Japan- Africa Exchange Program at Kyoto University 

Established through the Memorandum of Understanding jointly established by the Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE) and Kyoto University (KU), the Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program was inaugurated in 2018. This initiative provides stipends to exceptionally qualified researchers focusing on disciplines pertinent to African Studies.

The fellowship’s primary objective is to support the scholars from Kyoto University to conduct their research in the African Continent and facilitate the researcher from the partner institution in Africa to pursue their research journey. This fellowship period will range from up to three to twelve months and will begin between April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025.

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this fellowship program the candidates must hold an MA Degree or employee of the KU or KU’s partner institutions. African applicants must be able to provide two reference letters.

Application Process

The application can be completed in an online portal provided by the foundation. Additional materials will be requested for the eligible applicants. Late and incomplete submissions of applications will not be considered and will be automatically rejected.

The deadline to complete and submit the application is until November 15, 2023.

Fellowship Awards 

  • Financial assistance/ Stipend will be awarded to the successful applicants. The amount will be ranging to up to €27,500 annually.
  • The stipend may be adjusted depending on the duration of the awards.
  • Travel/Visa arrangement
