$75,000 Nieman-Berkman Klein Scholarships in Journalistic Innovation at Harvard, 2023

What are the study areas?

Social Sciences, Administration and Law

For what level is the scholarship?

Research

Who awards the scholarship?

Nieman Foundation | Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society

Who is this scholarship for?

The Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowships in Journalistic Innovation at Harvard bring individuals to Harvard University to work on a specific course of an investigation or a specific project related to journalistic innovation.

The scholarship is a collaboration between the Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard.

Both organizations share a common set of interests around journalism, innovation, and the evolution of the digital space, and both have long-standing scholarship programs that offer a year of learning and collaboration with other members of the Harvard community.

Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship candidate proposals can address any topic related to the digital transformation of journalism. Examples include ideas for new sources of income to fund journalism, building new tools for reporting, or researching news consumption patterns. Candidates must explain how their proposals will benefit journalism.

On-campus, Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellows take advantage of the wealth of resources available in and around Harvard for their work.

Along with the Nieman Foundation and the Berkman Klein Center, Cambridge is home to institutions such as the Harvard Business School, the MIT Center for Civic Media, the Hauser Center for Nonprofits, the Shorenstein Center for Press, Politics. and Public Policy, Harvard Innovation. Lab (i-lab) and other centers interested in the evolution of journalism.

Nieman-Berkman Klein Scholars are expected to fully participate in and serve as a bridge between the Nieman and Berkman Klein Scholarship programs.

They are also expected to share the results of their work with other fellows and through the Nieman Journalism Lab.

The Nieman-Berkman Klein Fellowship is open to both US and international applicants. Candidates must be practicing journalists or work for a news organization in a business, technology, or leadership capacity. Freelance journalists can apply.

What are the benefits of the Nieman-Berkman Klein Scholarships in Journalistic Innovation at Harvard?

Nieman Fellows receive;
A stipend of $ 75,000 is paid over a nine-month period to cover living costs. The Nieman Foundation also provides financial support for health insurance and childcare. Fellows are not eligible for health insurance through Harvard University. People who cannot retain their current health insurance would have the option of purchasing a plan through the Massachusetts Health Connector, which is an independent state agency that serves as a marketplace for MA residents to find, compare, and enroll in health insurance.
2. Nieman also covers the cost of attending Harvard classes for fellows and their affiliates. The affiliates are the partners and spouses of the scholarship recipients. They enjoy many of the same privileges as fellows and can attend classes, use Harvard libraries and other facilities, and participate in almost all Nieman activities.
3. Because funding from the original Nieman legacy is restricted to US citizens, Nieman International Fellows are encouraged to work with Nieman staff to find financial support from sources outside of the Nieman Foundation.

However, obtaining external funding is not a condition for being selected for a scholarship. Funding generally comes from foundations and journalism organizations in the recipients’ home countries. The Nieman Foundation works with various international foundations that provide financial support to citizens of certain nations or regions of the world.
