The Master (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights, up to 25 full scholarships are available for African citizens for the academic session of 2022.

LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa is a prestigious intensive one-year course where 25-30 exceptional individuals spend 6 months in Pretoria and 6 months at one of 13 partner universities across Africa.

They are taught by eminent professors in the field of human rights and undergo many practical training exercises. It is the only course of its kind in Africa. Graduates become members of the HRDA Alumni Association, whose 482 members are now active in the full spectrum of human rights work: from grassroots, through civil service, to international organizations such as the African Union and the United Nations. What You Need To Know About Human Rights Masters Scholarship For African Students

The objectives of the LLM/MPhil program are:

  • Train human rights experts who can be employed.  in government ministries, other national, international and regional organizations related to human rights and democracy. The objective is to ensure the effectiveness of these bodies, imparting professionalism and operational competence. The end result is to ensure the transfer of technical skills and strengthen the capacity of these organizations with the aim of improving the protection and promotion of human rights and democratization in Africa.
  • Expand collaboration between African universities. The collaboration should result in a network of lawyers and academics specializing in human rights and democracy. The program plans to promote research and teaching that address the particular needs of Africa. Some identified needs include conflict prevention; democratic transition; strengthening of civil society, institutional construction and rule of law. The program also aims to develop and strengthen links between civil society, government agencies and international organizations.
  • Develop a relationship between the African Masters and other regional Masters, such as the European Master in Human Rights and Democratization (EMA), the Master in Human Rights and Democratization in South-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Master in Human Rights. and democratization.

Eligible Nationality

The scholarship is open to all African students to study at any of the above-mentioned universities in the country.

The LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratization in Africa is a unique program that admits 25-30 applicants from African countries with the following degrees and preferably experience in the field of human rights:

  • Law students
    A degree that allows access to the legal profession (for example, LLB or  license en droit )
  • Other students
    At least an honors degree in a discipline relevant to human rights and democratization

During an intensive one-year course, they are taught by eminent lecturers in the field of human rights and gain valuable practical exposure. It is the only course of its kind in Africa.
