At the University of Guyana, the country’s main public university, the tuition fees for undergraduate programs range from GYD 150,000 – 250,000 per academic year (equivalent to USD 720 – 1,200). For graduate programs, the tuition fees range from GYD 200,000 – 350,000 per academic year (equivalent to USD 960 – 1,680).

Private institutions in Guyana may have higher tuition fees, depending on the program of study and the level of education. It is important to note that additional costs, such as textbooks, housing, and other fees, may also be required and should be factored into the overall cost of attending college in Guyana.

Cost of Living in Guyana

In general, the cost of living in Guyana is relatively low compared to many other countries in the region.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment in a city center can cost around GYD 60,000 – 100,000 per month (equivalent to USD 290 – 480). Outside the city center, the cost can be lower, ranging from GYD 35,000 – 75,000 per month (equivalent to USD 170 – 360).

Main Languages Spoken in Guyana

The official language of Guyana is English, which is used in government, education, and media. However, Guyana is a culturally diverse country, and several other languages are also spoken there.

Some of the most widely spoken languages in Guyana, aside from English, include:

  1. Creolese or Guyanese Creole – a creole language based on English, with influences from African and Indigenous languages.
  2. Arawak – a group of Indigenous languages spoken by the Arawak people, including Lokono (also known as Arawak) and Wapishana.
  3. Caribbean Hindustani – a creole language based on Hindi, with influences from English, Bhojpuri, and other Indian languages. It is spoken by the Indo-Guyanese community.
  4. Portuguese – spoken by a small community of Portuguese descent.
  5. Chinese – spoken by a small community of Chinese descent.
