The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program system is open to students who are residents and citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country. You must be a first-time applicant to the University of Toronto who has not yet commenced your undergraduate studies elsewhere.

To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • you are a resident and high school student of a country within Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Demonstrate financial need corresponding to that of the two lowest quintiles of your country.
  • Have very strong academic results within their school system.
  • Possess a record of leadership and extracurricular involvement.
  • Maintain a strong desire to return to Africa to help and work towards regional socio-economic development
  • Be a graduate of a recognized high school or have the necessary academic requirements.
  • Meet the necessary English requirements (depending on the country).

An application includes the following components:

  • A Complete  Online Application: All applicable sections must be completed, including contact information, financial information, personal details, and answers to essay questions.
  • Financial Documents and  Transcript – Upload a scanned copy of financial documentation and high school transcript and any other academic information.
  • Two References  – Provide the names and contact details of two people who will serve as your referees. We will contact your referees directly and ask them to submit their letters of reference through a secure website.
