Introduction

Many students find studying abroad a life-changing experience. It opens new horizons, exposes them to different cultures and perspectives, and enhances their academic and professional skills. However, studying abroad can also cost a lot, especially for students from developing countries who face financial constraints and limited opportunities. That is why scholarships are a valuable resource for those who aspire to pursue higher education in a foreign country.

One of the scholarships that can help students achieve their dreams of studying in Sweden is the Axel Adler Scholarship. The University of Gothenburg, one of Scandinavia’s largest and most prestigious universities, offers this scholarship as its main program. The Axel Adler Scholarship covers the tuition fee for the recipients, who can choose from a wide range of international master’s or bachelor’s programs at the University of Gothenburg. The scholarship is highly competitive and selective, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and motivation for the chosen program.

Scholarship Provider

The Adlerbertska Scholarship Foundation and the Adlerbertska Grant Foundation, which Axel Adler, a prominent Swedish businessman and philanthropist, established, fund the Axel Adler Scholarship. Axel Adler was born in 1898 in Gothenburg and became a successful entrepreneur in the textile industry. He also donated generously to various causes, especially education and research. He created the foundations in 1961 to support students and researchers at the University of Gothenburg and other institutions. The foundations have awarded more than 10,000 scholarships and grants since then.

Eligible Applicants

Students who are required to pay tuition fees in Sweden can apply for the Axel Adler Scholarship. This means that students from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland are not eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship is also not available for students who already have a Swedish university degree or a permanent residence permit in Sweden.

Host Country

Sweden, a Nordic country in Northern Europe, is the host country for the Axel Adler Scholarship. Sweden is known for its high quality of life, social welfare, environmental sustainability, and innovation. Sweden is also a member of the EU and the Schengen Area, meaning students can travel freely within the region. Sweden has a rich and diverse culture influenced by history, geography, and neighboring countries. Sweden also offers a variety of natural attractions, such as forests, lakes, mountains, and islands.

Scholarship Worth

The Axel Adler Scholarship covers the tuition fee for the whole program that the student has been admitted to. This means four semesters (120 credits) for master’s programs and six (180 credits) for bachelor’s programs. The student has to arrange and finance their living and accommodation expenses independently, as the scholarship does not cover them. The scholarship also includes an insurance policy (FAS+) that covers medical and dental care, personal liability, and legal expenses.

Level and Field of Study

International master’s or bachelor’s programs at the University of Gothenburg are available for the Axel Adler Scholarship. The university offers over 60 master’s programs and three bachelor’s programs in English, covering various disciplines such as arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, health sciences, education, business, law, and engineering. Some popular programs are Global Studies, International Administration and Global Governance, Software Engineering, International Relations, Business and Economics, and Investigative Journalism.
