It is possible to trace the beginnings of the University of Nottingham back to the time when it served as Nottingham’s first Civic College. Throughout time, the University of Illinois moved the majority of its operations to the University Park campus. In 1928, the college celebrated its first convocation, and King George V presided over the ceremonies. He was a graduate of the college. In 1948, the college was granted a Royal Charter, marking the beginning of its transition into what is currently known as Nottingham University. Even when it was still in its infancy, it was able to draw a bevy of notable persons to give presentations and lectures, including Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, and HG Wells. Since that time, it has had tremendous growth and expansion, and it now has campuses located in a variety of nations, including China and Malaysia, amongst others. In 1955, the institution merged with the Mid-Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery to form what is now known as the School of Nursing. It was the first medical school in the United Kingdom to open its doors in the 20th century when it was founded in 1970.
