About the International South African Student Program

The South Africa-Washington International Program (SAWIP) inspires, develops, and supports a diverse new generation of young South African leaders who have a history of serving others with humility and integrity, and an ambition to be active citizens and servant leaders.

There are a number of scholarship opportunities currently available for South African students to undertake study, research, and exchanges in other countries.

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) coordinates several of these scholarships, while others are managed by other international, national and provincial departments or government agencies. The scholarships are for South African citizens and require a commitment to return to South Africa upon completion of studies.

Through a varied program of hands-on leadership and service activities opportunities in addition to skill development, these emerging leaders establish trust based on a shared experience with their team that transcends racial, socioeconomic, religious, and other boundaries.
