The research program in drug development and medicinal chemistry that is housed inside the Swansea University School of Medicine is among the best in the world. Because medicinal chemistry is so important in so many different facets of the drug discovery and development research sector, it presents a wealth of chances for study that crosses academic boundaries. This research project, which is being carried out in conjunction with Cardiff University and the Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven, Belgium, aims to discover and develop novel antiviral agents for norovirus infections. These antiviral agents are intended to be used both as treatments and as preventative measures during outbreaks. The norovirus, also known as the “winter vomiting bug,” is the leading cause of non-bacterial gastroenteritis around the world. This virus is responsible for 699 million illnesses and 219,000 deaths each year, in addition to the enormous societal costs and health expenditures that are associated with it.

At this time, there is neither a commercial vaccine nor an antiviral medicine that can prevent or treat infections caused by the norovirus. The only treatment available is simply supportive care, which includes the use of oral rehydration salts. This project will use a combination of computer-aided drug design techniques (molecular modeling) and methods of synthetic organic chemistry to identify and synthesise novel antiviral treatments in the form of small-molecule compounds. These novel antiviral treatments will target the norovirus NS1-2 protein and the viral polymerase, both of which are promising targets for the development of antiviral agents.

These targets will be investigated using a set of in silico analyses, which will serve as a guide for the design and synthesis of novel compounds. These compounds will be able to interfere with the fundamental functions of the proteins, and as a result, will be able to disrupt the life cycle of the virus. The newly created compounds will be put through a series of biochemical tests in-house before being sent to some of the most advanced drug development centers in the world to be examined for their ability to inhibit viral replication.

In order to facilitate the research and provide one-of-a-kind educational opportunities pertaining to more advanced research methods, cutting-edge laboratories and cutting-edge equipment will be made available. You are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Salvatore Ferla ([email protected]), to learn more about the project and the training opportunities available to the successful candidate. If you have a background in medicinal or organic chemistry, drug discovery, or closely related disciplines, then you are an excellent candidate.

About the Scholarship Provider:

Swansea University has had an international impact ever since it was established in 1920 thanks to its commitment to research as its guiding principle. It is ranked in the top 30 universities in the United Kingdom by both the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. Additionally, it is among the world’s best 30 universities. With a stellar reputation for teaching and research, this university ranks among the best in the world (Times Higher Education Rankings 2020). Aside from being named Welsh University of the Year for 2019 and 2020, the institution also received a Gold medal from the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in recognition of its exceptional achievement in these same categories.

In terms of graduate employability, it consistently ranks in the top 10 of British universities (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education 2018). Swansea, the country’s second-largest city, is home to the establishment and is widely regarded for its vibrant cultural scene. Swansea University is highly sought after by international students because of its beautiful waterfront campuses. Swansea University is the only university in Wales to have two separate campuses that have both been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Status Award. Swansea University has seen an increase in research income of at least 70 percent over the previous decade, cementing its position as one of the most research-intensive universities in the United States.

The Swansea University College of Science, the Swansea University College of Engineering, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Human and Health Sciences, the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law, the School of Management, and the Swansea University Medical School can all be found on either the Singleton Park or Bay campuses. Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA), British Computer Society (BCS), British Psychological Society (BPS), Royal Aeronautical Society, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Bar Council of India, Solicitors Regulation Authority, British Computer Society (BCS), British Psychological Society (BPS), British Cosmetology Association, British Psychological Society (BPS), British Cos

Its alumni have gone on to assume leadership roles in various fields, and the school has created a list of those who have made a significant impact. Annabelle Apsion, an actress, Geoffrey Thomas, president of Kellogg College at Oxford, Jonathan Hill, host of Wales Tonight on ITV Wales, Jason Mohammad, host of Television/Radio Presenter at BBC Wales, Chris White, an English International Rugby Referee, Graham Ryder, a Geologist, Lunar Scientist, and Recipient of the National Medal for Science, and many more are all alumni of Swansea University. First-year undergraduate and graduate students who wish to be guaranteed university accommodation must submit their housing applications by June 31. Residential Services provides lodging for approximately 4,500 students. More than a thousand rooms may be found in the largest building, which is around four kilometers from the main Singleton Campus. Most campuses house their students in a combination of standard dorm rooms and suites with private bathrooms.

Student Lodging Options Swansea is an organization run by the university that helps students locate private rental housing and organizes communal living arrangements in the city. Swansea also has student housing complexes where people can room together. Swansea, Wales’ second-largest city, is situated on the country’s southern coast, around 70 kilometers west of Cardiff. From the university campuses, you can walk to both the city center and the coast. The city’s nightlife and cultural scene are particularly popular among students from the United Kingdom, despite the fact that it is better known for its watersports and the stunning scenery along its coastline. The sciences have historically been a forte, but the humanities, with their global recognition, now provide a substantial boost. Swansea University is frequently regarded as one of the top 15 UK universities for graduate employment, with a 97% graduate employment rate.

Swansea University is frequently ranked among the top ten institutions in the United Kingdom by the National Student Survey, and its students consistently rank their educational experience there as among the finest in the country. When compared to other large cities in the UK, Swansea has a relatively low cost of living. The city is so vibrant, energetic, and welcoming that it is sometimes called a “home away from home” for its residents.
