People who are interested in working on specific initiatives aimed to promote journalism in some innovative way are eligible for short-term research opportunities through the Nieman Visiting Fellowships that are offered at Harvard. Candidates do not need to be working journalists in order to be considered, but they do need to demonstrate how their work at Harvard and the Nieman Foundation may improve the prospects for the future of journalism. It’s possible that this is connected to research, programming, design, or even financial plans, but it could also be tied to another subject. Applicants from both the United States and other countries are encouraged to submit their applications.

About the Scholarship Sponsor:

The Nieman Foundation is home to a diverse range of programs that aim to advance and raise the professional standards of journalism, as well as educate and support those who are positioned to make significant contributions to the industry in the future. Our fellowship programs, our publications (both online and in print), and our programming that brings together some of the most influential minds of our era are all ways that we accomplish this goal.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard was initially established as a fellowship for a select group of journalists who were selected to spend an academic year at Harvard in pursuit of customized study programs designed to increase their knowledge and leadership abilities. Since the program’s inception in 1938, it has given Nieman fellowships to over 1,500 journalists from approximately 100 different nations throughout the world. We also provide a short-term visiting fellowship for people who have a particular goal to improve journalism and who would like to spend up to a year at Harvard working on developing their idea. Digital innovators, technologists, researchers, and journalists from the United States and other countries have participated in the program as visiting fellows. Instructor of Digital Storytelling Aleszu Bajak provides assistance to 2017 Nieman Fellows. During a workshop, Maciek Nabrdalik and Felicia Fonseca are seen here.

The unique gift of leisure to think, learn, plan, and create in a rigorous academic atmosphere is something that Harvard and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard offer to both sets of fellows. After completing their work on campus, our fellows have gone on to secure senior leadership roles in newsrooms, produce journalism that is innovative across all forms of media, begin entrepreneurial enterprises, and win the most prestigious awards in their respective fields. The Nieman Foundation for Journalism is unique in that in addition to its fellowship program, it also houses a variety of publishing and convening efforts centered on journalism. These are the following:

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism is an online enterprise that focuses on the development of new media and innovative practices. Nieman Lab has a staff of reporters who write daily about the most significant developments in journalism and has become a leading source of news about digital media for an international audience. Nieman Reports is a website and print magazine that investigates contemporary journalism’s most important challenges and provides a forum for the industry’s leading voices on issues of ethics, values, innovation, and other topics. In addition to this, it acts as a town square for Nieman’s global alumni network and hosts Nieman Storyboard, a website that highlights excellent narrative journalism as well as the art and craft of reported storytelling. Storyboard has developed into an important meeting place for the leading professionals in the field of narrative journalism, who come here to discuss what works and why it works.

In addition, dozens of seminars, master courses, conferences, and award ceremonies are held at Harvard’s elegant Lippmann House, which is also home to the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. Not only do these bring together our colleagues, but also the widest possible variety of persons who are actively practicing, celebrating, challenging, and promoting journalism.
