The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Project aims to develop exceptional leaders across Africa by providing financial assistance for postgraduate study as well as participation in a leadership development curriculum of the highest possible standard.

A recipient of a Mandela Rhodes Scholarship has the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies at a South African educational institution that is recognised by the South African Council on Higher Education (SACHE). At this time, the Scholarship may be used towards either an Honors or a Master’s degree and may be held for a period of one to a maximum of two years.

The following are the three pillars that make up the leadership development programme.

  • Three residential workshops
  • Three regional group pods
  • Mentoring

About the Scholarship Provider:

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is one of the three official legacy organisations established in Nelson Mandela’s honour. It was established in 2003 in collaboration with the Rhodes Trust. Our mission is to strengthen Africa’s ability for exceptional leadership at all levels. We seek out young people with aspirations to use their skills to benefit their communities and our continent in Africa, provide funding for them, and provide them the ability to act on those ambitions. To accomplish this, we will award a postgraduate scholarship to a deserving young leader who will then travel to South Africa to further their education and take part in a residential Leadership Development Program.

Our curriculum is based on Nelson Mandela’s theory that transformation from the inside out is the first step towards becoming a leader, as well as our foundation ideals of entrepreneurship, education, and reconciliation, as well as leadership. Young African leaders from 33 countries have been selected to receive one of the 622 Mandela Rhodes Scholarships that have been awarded by the MRF during the past 20 years.

Young change agents from all over the African continent have the opportunity to become a part of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of having a transformative influence thanks to the Mandela Rhodes Foundation. If you want to use your talents to help people in Africa, we can provide you with a prestigious postgraduate scholarship and a Leadership Development Program that will help you develop personally and professionally in ways that will change your life forever.
