About the Scholarship Sponsor:

When it comes to, Georgetown University is the oldest in the United States. The United States Constitution went into effect in 1789, the same year it was established. Georgetown’s devotion to its fundamental ideals is reflected in the diversity of its student body, professors, and staff; the university’s emphasis on justice and the common good; and the institution’s intellectual openness and international nature. Among the world’s top research institutions, Georgetown now stands at the forefront. All of Georgetown University’s undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as its professional schools, professional development and certificate offerings, and medical residencies, draw on the university’s strong liberal arts foundation. At Georgetown University, the Georgetown College is both the oldest and largest institution. Students learn how to apply their theoretical understanding into practice.

The hallmarks of a Jesuit liberal arts education include the development of inquiring minds, reverence for history and reason, and a zest for life’s many opportunities. These three things stand at the core of the Jesuit philosophy. You will mature as a person as well as a scholar and professional during your time at the College. When you graduate from college, you’ll be well-equipped to take advantage of the many opportunities available to you and to have a fulfilling career and personal life. The College offers a well-rounded education that covers not only the traditional disciplines but also the arts, languages, mathematics, and natural and physical sciences.

Outstanding Georgetown University professors work together toward a single goal: helping their students become future leaders in academia, the professions, government, and the public sector. Faculty members collaborate with students and show genuine interest in them as people in order to impart not just their knowledge but also the richness of their own life experiences. Distinguished scholars from the United States and around the world teach at University, bringing with them decades of professional experience to the classroom. The faculty members not only devote themselves fully to the art of teaching, which entails imparting knowledge and skills unique to their professions, but are also actively engaged in the process of producing and implementing new information through research.

Georgetown University provides numerous avenues for students to engage in academic research and other scholarly activities, including the Georgetown Undergraduate Research Opportunities program, the Carroll Fellows Initiative, the Hughes Scholars program, and many more. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences provides support to students who are attempting to secure funding for independent research beyond the scope of their home departments (GSAS).

The libraries at Georgetown provide a solid intellectual basis for the university’s research efforts. Together, these seven libraries make available more than 2.4 million volumes and 35,000 periodicals in print and electronic formats. And that’s not all: thanks to the Washington Library Research Consortium, students and teachers have easier access to the Library of Congress and can borrow materials from there. The American Civil War caused a precipitous decline in enrollment at Georgetown University, which went from 313 to 17 between 1859 and 1861. But in the decades after World War II, Georgetown grew into the world-class institution it is today. Between the years 1873 and 1882, Patrick Healy served as president of the university and made history as the first African American to earn a doctoral degree. During his presidency, he shifted the university’s focus to include more courses in the natural and social sciences. He also pushed for the development of the campus’s signature Flemish Romanesque building, Healy Hall.

The university is currently comprised of nine separate schools at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Liberal arts education can be found at Georgetown College, while international diplomacy is taught at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. More than 130 countries are represented among Georgetown’s student body’s approximately 11,000 undergraduates. Around 10,000 graduate and doctoral students supplement the over 7,000 undergraduates at this institution. Although Georgetown University has no official ties to the Roman, is deeply ingrained in the school’s culture. At Georgetown, students learn to value service to others above all else, especially the needs of the most vulnerable.
