About the Scholarship Provider:

Georgetown University is the oldest university in the United States. It was established in 1789, the same year that the Constitution of the United States went into effect. The diversity of Georgetown’s students, faculty, and staff, as well as the university’s dedication to justice and the common good, intellectual openness, and international character, all serve to exemplify the university’s commitment to its founding principles. Today, Georgetown is a leading international research university.

There are undergraduate schools, graduate schools, professional schools, professional development programs and certificates, medical residencies, and other programs at Georgetown University, all of which are based on the liberal arts heritage that lies at the institution’s core. The Georgetown College is the school at Georgetown University that has been around the longest and is the largest. It teaches its students how to put their knowledge into practice. A Jesuit education in the liberal arts is defined by the cultivation of critical thinking, a respect for tradition and human reason, and an enjoyment of life and all the endeavors it presents. These are the three pillars of the Jesuit tradition.

You will develop not simply as a scholar and a professional throughout your time at the College, but also as a complete and rounded individual. Your education at the College will prepare you for a job and life that are both rich and enjoyable once you graduate. The curriculum at the College is balanced across a wide array of academic fields, including the humanities, social sciences, sciences and mathematics, languages and linguistics.

The excellent teachers of Georgetown University share a common goal: to encourage and support their student colleagues as they develop the skills necessary to assume positions of leadership in fields such as research, the professions, teaching, and public service. Collaborating with their students and taking an interest in them as individuals, faculty members share not only their expertise but also the depth of their experiences. University’s exceptional faculty consists of recognized experts from both the United States and other countries who contribute a lifetime’s worth of experience to the classroom. The faculty members are not only extensively involved in the process of developing and implementing new information through research, but they are also completely dedicated to the art of teaching, which involves sharing the knowledge and abilities specific to their respective fields.

Students have the opportunity to participate in academic research and other scholarly activities at Georgetown University through a variety of programs and initiatives, such as the Georgetown Undergraduate Research Opportunities program, the Carroll Fellows Initiative, and the Hughes Scholars program, as well as in the university’s individual academic departments and programs. Graduate students who are looking for extramural research funding and investigating new topics of research that cross traditional academic lines are given assistance by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

Research endeavors at Georgetown are supported by a strong intellectual foundation, which can be found in the university libraries. Seven different libraries come together to offer access to a combined total of 2.4 million books and 35,000 print and electronic publications. In addition to this, students and faculty members enjoy increased access to the Library of Congress as well as borrowing privileges with the Washington Library Research Consortium. Between 1859 and 1861, the number of students at Georgetown University dropped from 313 to 17, and the university came dangerously close to being forced to close as a result of the American Civil War. However, in the years that followed the war, Georgetown developed into the prestigious university that it is today. Patrick Healy was the first African American to earn a PhD and served as president of the university between the years 1873 and 1882. During his tenure as president, he reorganized the university’s curriculum to place a greater emphasis on history and the natural sciences. He also initiated the construction of Healy Hall, a prominent Flemish Romanesque structure that is located in the center of the campus.

There are currently nine undergraduate and graduate schools that make up the institution. These schools include Georgetown College, which provides a liberal arts curriculum, and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, which has taught leaders of state and politicians from all over the world.

Students at Georgetown University come from over 130 different nations, making up approximately 11% of the total student body. The university has more than 7,000 undergraduate students and approximately 10,000 postgraduate students. Despite the fact that Georgetown University has never been affiliated with the Roman, still plays a significant role in the institution. Students at Georgetown are taught to place a priority on helping others, particularly those who are weak or disadvantaged.
