Canon Foundation in partnership with the European University Institute offers the Co-sponsored Research Fellowship intended for the Japanese Citizen who aims to further their research education in Italy for the academic year of 2022-2023.

The fellowship is to provide assistance to the Japanese students who want to pursue their post-doctoral research in the early stage of their career in any research area at the European University Institute in Italy.

Since 2007, the Canon Foundation in Europe and the European University Institute in Florence have annually jointly awarded the Canon Foundation Scholarship for Postgraduate Research at the EUI.
In this scholarship program, a Japanese person or a Japanese permanent resident will move to Florence, Italy to do their post-doctoral research. Information about the study research can be obtained from the European University Research Institute website.

The fellowships are intended to support postdoctoral research by scientists at the start of their professional careers in all disciplines at European academic institutes. Relationships are open to applicants who have completed their Ph.D. At the start of the relationship (September 1 each year).

About the Provider

Canon Foundation 

The Canon Foundation in Europe is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting international culture and relations between Europe and Japan. Established on December 22, 1987, under Dutch law by Canon Europa N.V., Canon’s European headquarters, registered in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Although the foundation is a legally and financially independent organization, it maintains a working relationship with Canon Europa N.V., which provided the initial funding. The Foundation is headquartered in Amstelveen, the Netherlands.

Europian University Institute 

European University Institute (EUI), the main scientific and human resources of Europe. Created in 1972 by the first member of the European Community, EUI has earned a reputation as a transit point for research and higher education.

The university hopes to support older people in education and the development of policies that will contribute to the development of social relations and the development of the European spirit. They contribute to the development of European culture and research through first-class colleges, interdisciplinary research on salient challenges, and robust intellectual discussion and debate.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants whose studies have been postponed due to vacation or illness will be granted the appropriate extension of the five-year rule. Specifically, an additional year is allowed for all women to rest, and if the illness is chronic or recurrent, the leave can be included by including the full duration of the illness. Descriptions of these situations should be included in the application. Proof will be requested by the candidate for selection.

Scholarship Duration 

The fellowship duration will be up to one year, commencing in September to August 2023.

Application Process 

The interested Japanese students can apply to the provided online portal for application by Canon Foundation. It is important that the application must be completed before submitting it, the application will be evaluated by the fellowship committees. All decisions will be final and cannot be deferred.

Research Publication 

Research conducted during the period is expected to be published as published by the European University Institute. In the form of a suitable worksheet, journal, or editor. The courses must be given in the research field of the European University Research Institute.

Acknowledgments 

The Canon European Foundation and the European University Research Institute will be acknowledged in every publication at the time. Fellows authorize their change of address and location to register their name and personal information with other Canon Fellow advertisers and on the Canon Foundation website.

Scholarship Awards 

A monthly stipend will be awarded an amount of €2,000, Successful applicants who receive other grants or stipends should report this to the Canon Foundation and the European University Institute in Europe, as the partnership has been adjusted by low rates (minimum €1,250 per month) based on additional income.

Family Allowance 

A family allowance of €300 monthly is paid to the student’s partner if the partner’s income does not exceed €2,000 per month when the partner is in Florence. In addition, there is an allowance of €200 per month for each child staying in Florence. Applicants will declare that they have not received similar payments from any other source and are entitled to such payments upon presentation of relevant evidence (such as a marriage certificate or equivalent birth certificate). A home or college certificate is required for homeschoolers who have received a full-time education and are over 18 years of age. There are no scholarships for children under 26.

Travel Expenses

The fellows will be receiving one tourist class return trip from their home country to Florence, Italy.

Keep in mind that the successful fellows must be able to provide adequate insurance during their stay in Italy. Fellows are responsible for preparing visas and may seek assistance from the European University Institute. The Canon European Foundation will send the scholarship holder a statement to be used in their visa application. Fellows plan their own trips.

The accommodation for the successful fellows will be assisted by the European Institute housing program.

Scholarship Deadline 

The deadline to complete and submit the application is until October 118, 2022. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.
