Because of a donation provided by the family of the late Andrea Levy, the University of Edinburgh is in the privileged position to be able to provide financial assistance to applicants of Black African and Caribbean origin who come from socio-economically disadvantaged homes.

In remembrance of the novelist Andrea Levy, winner of multiple awards, the Andrea Levy Scholarships will be awarded beginning in the year 2020. Although Ms. Levy was born in London to Jamaican parents, she maintained deep personal and family ties to Edinburgh and to Scotland. As a result, the University of Edinburgh feels privileged to be able to contribute to her legacy by acting as the host institution for this scholarship program.

About the Scholarship Provider:

It was founded in 1096, making it the oldest municipal foundation in the history of the English-speaking world and the sixth-oldest university in the United Kingdom. Edinburgh, Scotland is home to the prestigious Institute of Edinburgh. The University, which now encompasses more than 44,000 enrolled students and five distinct facilities across the city, is rapidly expanding. The art collections, rare books and manuscripts, musical instruments, natural history specimens, geological specimens, anatomical models, and rare publications housed by these institutions are among the world’s finest.

All first-year students who do not reside in Edinburgh will get a housing offer from the University of Edinburgh. Over 25 hotels and other lodging options are within easy walking or transit distance of Edinburgh’s downtown. About two kilometers from the city’s epicenter, Pollock Hall offers 1,900 rooms and on-site catering. There are both private and shared bathrooms accessible, in addition to the basic ones. There are also a number of dormitories and apartments spread out over the city that provide students the option of self-catering, with each apartment having the potential to host up to six individuals.

At the start of each school year, the University of Edinburgh offers a free accommodation counseling service to students who are looking for private lodging. For the past few years, 83% of their research has been regarded as either world-leading or globally exceptional, and they have won the renowned Queen’s Anniversary Award on five separate occasions. In addition, since 1967, its commercial service has helped 500+ businesses get their feet off the ground.

Of of Edinburgh University’s total student body of over 26,000 undergraduates and 15,000 graduate students, the vast majority are not from the United Kingdom. These children are able to take use of the excellent teaching and learning resources available at the school. For its innovative distance learning master’s programs that have revolutionized postgraduate education for trainee surgeons, the university was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2013. It was the first university in the UK to offer massive, open, online courses (MOOCs) to students all over the world. When it comes to innovative approaches to learning, universities often lead the way. With a staff of over 15,000 (of which 36% are international scholars), it is able to make a substantial, long-lasting, and socially responsible contribution to Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the rest of the globe.

In 2015, the university’s Institute for Cardiovascular Science was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its study of coronary heart disease, which led to major reductions in mortality rates as a result of new medications and guidelines. This award was given to the Centre because of their efforts to reduce those rates. There is a rich tradition of discovery, creativity, and study at this institution. Professor Peter Higgs, who developed the Higgs boson theory and won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics, and the Roslin Institute, which is linked with the institution, are both widely recognized as pioneers in this field. Based on the most current assessment of UK university research quality, 38% of the institution’s efforts were deemed to be world-leading, while 45% were deemed to be internationally good.

Edinburgh, the Scottish capital, is also a World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO. The city’s beauty and scientific fame have earned it the moniker “the Athens of the North” since the 18th century. One of the prettiest and greenest cities in Europe. As a major contributor to Edinburgh’s lively spirit, the University of Edinburgh is an indispensable part of the city. Edinburgh has been voted the “Favorite UK City” by readers of the Observer, Conde Nast Traveler (who were awarded best city), and the Guardian every year since 2001. Winner of the Award To get to Edinburgh from any other major city in the UK or beyond, you can take advantage of the city’s excellent transportation links.
