About the Scholarship Sponsor:

York University was established in 1963 after receiving permission to open from the University Grants Commission in 1960. As chancellor, Lord James oversaw the university’s first day of classes on October 9, 1963, when it opened its doors to 230 freshmen. When it first started, the institution only had 28 faculty and staff members across six departments (economics, English, education, history, politics, and mathematics). Currently, the university is home to nine colleges in addition to approximately thirty research centers and departments. The university’s status as a recognized educational institution has been confirmed by the Privy Council.

The Heslington campus of the University of York has been growing and changing ever since it first opened. The campus is filled with monuments, sculptures, and academic buildings. The former King’s Manor is now home to the Department of Archaeology, the Centre for Medieval Studies, and the Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies. Concerts, competitions, conferences, graduations, fashion shows, and other events are regularly held at Central Hall, a tiered auditorium in the center of campus. The institution maintains an extensive library and archive system, which includes numerous locations both on campus and in the surrounding community. The JB Morrell Library is the primary resource center on campus. You can also find Heslington Hall on campus.

Archaeology, science, computer science, law, management, medicine, mathematics, languages, arts, philosophy, psychology, and sociology are just some of the fields of study available at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels at the University of York. The university now has 18,930 active students. Many prestigious research institutions throughout the world work with this university. It is one of a consortium of 24 elite schools committed to advanced academic study and research. The university also has a strong international reputation for its student exchange and research partnerships. It offers outstanding opportunities for employment in well-known companies and provides students with top-notch professional training.

The university has produced a number of notable and successful alumni. Famous British journalist, media executive, TV host, and football official Greg Dyke does it all. Vice President of the World Bank Group and former President of Portugal Anbal Cavaco Silva Mahmoud Mohieldin. Famous British writer Jung Chang is well known for her book “Wild Swans,” which has won numerous accolades. As an English author and screenwriter, Anthony Horowitz is best known for his work on the “Diamond Brothers,” “The Power of Five,” and “Alex Rider” film franchises. The late Han Seung-soo, former Prime Minister of South Korea Journalist and novelist Peter Hitchens writes for The Mail. In addition to “The Abolition of Britain” and “The War We Never Fought,” “The Rage Against God” is another one of his well-known works.

York is a forward-thinking, research-intensive university that aims to create life-saving discoveries, breakthrough technologies, and cultural improvements in order to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. The University’s research strategy rests on seven pillars that align the institution’s academic strengths with the most pressing scientific, social, and environmental issues of our day. 35% of university research in the United Kingdom was rated as “world-leading” in a recent evaluation, with 48% receiving the “international excellent” designation.

The intellectual rigor and worldwide focus of the University’s research informs the excellent quality of its classroom instruction.
