We are becoming more and more engulfed in an information epidemic, which the widespread dissemination of health misinformation online along with the rising distrust of experts has only served to highlight with tragically dramatic emphasis.

This project takes as its starting point the idea that addressing the infodemic requires serious engagement not only with its symptoms but also with its fundamental causes. These causes are considered to be within the purview of social epistemology, which investigates how information is disseminated and how individuals can become more responsible information consumers.

Those who spread fake news online frequently portray themselves as trustworthy and knowledgeable. This is done in a way that has the potential to easily mislead not only dedicated conspiracy theorists, but also those who are inexperienced in differentiating between reliable and unreliable sources of information.

The findings of scientific research regarding the rate at which misinformation is disseminated online make the problem even more difficult to solve.

The vast majority of academic research and policy initiatives have concentrated their efforts on treating symptoms rather than the causes of this infodemic.

One prominent political strategy that aims to combat the spread of misinformation takes the form of censoring posters who violate the terms of service of social media platforms and deleting content (as has been done on Facebook) (Twitter).

Such strategies have significant drawbacks, as there is evidence that merely hiding content or banning users in situations in which the media consumer is not privy to the rationale for doing so can itself contribute to the development of conspiratorial thought patterns, thereby making the problem even worse.

Even more, content removal policies effectively only sanction violations of existing norms online; such policies neither identify the source of the problem nor clearly outline positive norms. This is because such policies neither identify the source of the problem nor clearly outline positive norms.

About the Scholarship:

One of the most well-known educational establishments in Scotland, the University of Aberdeen is founded on public research. It is a university that was established in the year 1495 and is comprised of a total of 12 schools where students can receive their education. The University of Aberdeen has been consistently ranked as one of the top 200 universities in the world over the past few years. In addition to that, the Times Higher Education University’s 2019 impact rankings positioned it in the 31st spot across the entire world. In addition to this, The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide recognized it as the “Scottish University of the Year 2019.”

King’s College and Marischal College, a second university founded in 1593 and recognized as a Protestant alternative to the first university, merged to form the University of Aberdeen in 1860, giving rise to the institution in its present form. The Marischal College was established in 1593. It is the location of two campuses, the most prominent of which is the King’s College campus, which is located in the Old Aberdeen neighborhood of the city.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as the School of Medical Sciences, are both located on the university’s Foresterhill campus, which is another campus that the university possesses. These two buildings make up a significant portion of one of the most extensive medical campuses in all of Europe. On the Old Aberdeen campus, you’ll find the university’s main library in addition to the departments of arts, social sciences, and physical sciences.
