The weather in Melbourne is notoriously difficult to anticipate due to its variable oceanic climate that is moderate. This is primarily as a result of Melbourne’s location on the boundary between extremely hot inland areas and the cool Southern Ocean, which acts as a natural temperature regulator for the city. This difference in temperature is most noticeable during the spring and summer months, and it can lead to the production of highly powerful cold fronts if it persists for long enough. These cold fronts have the potential to bring about severe weather, including gale-force winds, violent thunderstorms, and hail, significant drops in temperature, and persistent precipitation. In the winter, Melbourne experiences temperatures that are lower than those of the state capitals of the other states that are located on the mainland of Australia. Although there have been records of temperatures as low as -2.8 degrees Celsius, snowfall is not very usual. Frost and fog are more likely to occur in Melbourne during the winter months. It is recommended that you carry a warm autumn coat, such as a “Canadian” one, rather than merely a windbreaker.
