The Killam Scholarship and Prize Programs were founded in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his wife, Dorothy J. Killam, as well as by gifts given during her lifetime. These programs are named after Izaak Walton Killam. Their principal mission is to provide financial assistance to five Canadian institutions as well as the Canada Council for the Arts in order to facilitate the pursuit of higher education and research. Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies is responsible for funding the annual distribution of the Killam Doctoral Scholarships at the University of British Columbia. It was Mrs. Killam’s hope that the students who were awarded scholarships would be able to: “Have a good chance of making a significant contribution to the furtherance of knowledge or of achieving prominence in a field of endeavor. A Killam scholar should not be someone who only sees things from one perspective… Character should serve as the bedrock upon which any special distinction of intelligence is built.”

At the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Killam Doctoral Scholarships are the most prestigious rewards that may be won by graduate students. Each year, there are approximately 15-20 grants given out to the best doctoral students who entered the Affiliated Fellowships competition. At the moment, the Killam Doctoral Scholarship awards a yearly stipend with a value of $30,000 for two years in addition to a travel allowance in the amount of $2,000 for research-related travel over the 24 months that the scholarship is awarded.

About the Scholarship:

The University of British Columbia (UBC) was established in 1908; however, it did not formally introduce its students to the world until 1915. It is a university that is open to the public and may be found in the region of British Columbia in the nation of Canada. In the fields of education, scholarship, and research, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is widely regarded as a forerunner both in Canada and around the world. Tuum Est, which translates to “It is Yours,” is the motto of the University of British Columbia. This motto is a proclamation of the institution’s commitment to generating possibilities for individuals who envisage a better future not only for themselves but also for others.

The University of British Columbia, which is frequently ranked among the top 20 universities in the world, is widely regarded as one of the finest public universities anywhere in the world. According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, the University of British Columbia came in at position number 47 on the list of the finest universities in the world. The Institution of British Columbia (UBC) has been ranked by Times Higher Education (THE) as the 37th best university in the world overall and the 13th best institution for impact for the year 2022. The University of British Columbia is now ranked number 35 on the list of the finest universities in the world that was prepared by US News and World Report for the year 2022.

By constructing its initial campus in the city of Vancouver, the University of British Columbia (UBC) planted its institutional flag in the city. When the second campus of the University of British Columbia opened its doors for the first time in the year 2005, it was located in Okanagan, which is more often known as Kelowna. The city of Vancouver is home to a number of UBC facilities, including the UBC Learning Exchange, the UBC Centre for Digital Media, and the UBC Robson Square – Extension of the UBC Vancouver campus. At the University of British Columbia, there are a total of 254 undergraduate programs and 244 postgraduate programs accessible to students. These courses are offered in the fields of economics, science, education, health and medical, technology, and the arts and humanities. For the purpose of their clinical education, students in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC have access to more than 80 distinct training locations located around the province. UBC has a total annual budget of about $3.4 billion, of which it invests $759 million on research funding across more than 10,000 distinct projects.

UBC keeps two regional bases—one in Hong Kong and one in India—in order to improve local ties and cooperation in research, education, and professional development. These bases are located in Hong Kong and India, respectively. There are more than 58,000 students registered to attend classes at the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus during the academic year 2021/2022, and there are more than 11,000 students registered to attend classes at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus during the same academic year. At the Okanagan campus, there are international students who make up 21.8 percent of the whole student body, whereas at the Vancouver campus, there are international students who make up 28.6 percent of the student body.

On the Vancouver campus, which comprises a total of 15 separate residence halls, there is housing for more than 13,000 students. The First Year Guarantee can be claimed by the overwhelming majority of students who are enrolled in the winter session housing program. Students in their first year are required to purchase a meal plan through the residence that they are assigned to live in (Orchard Commons, Place Vanier, or Totem Park) and are only permitted to live in Orchard Commons, Place Vanier, or Totem Park. In addition, students are not permitted to live in any other residence on campus. The remaining residences are set aside for students who are now enrolled in their second or third year of schooling, in addition to graduate students. The typical expense to the educational institution of providing a housing and meal plan for an undergraduate student in their first year is somewhere in the region of $12,000 to $14,500 annually. On the other hand, the annual rate for a certain room type can range anywhere from $10,300 to $15,000 per year.

The University of British Columbia is widely regarded as one of the most elite educational institutions on the entire planet. The education of 74 Rhodes Scholars, 65 Olympic medalists (including 19 gold medals), 8 Nobel laureates, and 3 Canadian prime ministers has been provided by UBC. Varsity athletes from UBC have also won 65 Olympic medals (including 19 gold medals) in their respective sports.
