The Killam Scholarship and Prize Programs were founded in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his wife, Dorothy J. Killam, as well as by gifts given during her lifetime. These programs are named after Izaak Walton Killam. Their principal mission is to provide financial assistance to five Canadian institutions as well as the Canada Council for the Arts in order to facilitate the pursuit of higher education and research.

Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies is responsible for funding the annual distribution of the Killam Doctoral Scholarships at the University of British Columbia. The recipients of Mrs. Killam’s scholarships should, in her words, “be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession.” This was Mrs. Killam’s hope for those who were chosen. A Killam scholar should not be someone who only sees things from one perspective… Character should serve as the foundation for any special differentiation in intellectual capacity.

About the Scholarship Provider:

Although UBC’s doors first opened to students in 1908, it wasn’t until 1915 that the school officially welcomed international students. The University of British Columbia is a public institution of higher education in British Columbia, Canada. The University of British Columbia (UBC) is widely regarded as a leader in education, scholarship, and research, not just in Canada, but globally. The University of British Columbia’s motto is “It is Yours,” or Tuum Est. In adopting this motto, the institution is making a public declaration of its intention to create opportunities for those who envision a better future not only for themselves but for others as well.

When it comes to public universities, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is commonly considered to be one of the best in the world. The QS World University Rankings 2023 placed the University of British Columbia at number 47 on its ranking of the top universities in the world. According to the 2022 edition of Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings, the University of British Columbia (UBC) is the 37th best university worldwide and the 13th best for impact. US News and World Report has released its annual ranking of the world’s top institutions for 2022, and the University of British Columbia comes in at number 35.

Vancouver is home to the first campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC), which effectively established UBC’s presence in the city. Okanagan, often known as Kelowna, is home to the University of British Columbia’s second campus, which initially opened its doors to students in 2005. Several campuses of the University of British Columbia (UBC) can be found in and around Vancouver. These include the UBC Learning Exchange, the UBC Centre for Digital Media, and the UBC Robson Square – Extension of the UBC Vancouver campus. There are 254 undergraduate majors and 244 graduate majors available at the University of British Columbia. The disciplines of economics, science, education, health and medicine, technology, and the arts and humanities all contribute to this selection of classes. Students in the UBC Faculty of Medicine can choose from more than 80 different sites across the province for their clinical instruction. UBC spends around 759 million a year on research funding for over 10,000 separate projects, out of a total yearly budget of about $3.4 billion.

To strengthen local links and cooperation in research, education, and professional development, UBC maintains two regional bases, one in Hong Kong and one in India. Both Hong Kong and India are home to bases. During the 2021–2022 school year, more than 58,000 students are expected to enroll at the Vancouver campus of the University of British Columbia, and more than 11,000 students are expected to enroll at the Okanagan campus. About 21.8% of the student body at the Okanagan campus is comprised of foreign students, whereas 28.6% of the student body is comprised of international students at the Vancouver campus.

More than 13,000 students have a place to stay on the Vancouver campus, which is home to 15 different dorms. Most students who sign up for the housing program during the winter term will be eligible to receive the First Year Guarantee. Freshmen can only live in one of three resident halls (Orchard Commons, Place Vanier, or Totem Park) and must buy a food plan through the hall where they are allocated to live. In addition, no alternative on-campus housing options are available to students. Graduate students and undergraduates who are currently in their second or third year of study are given priority for the remaining housing options. Colleges and universities typically spend between $12,000 and $14,500 per year to cover the costs of housing and feeding a first-year student. However, depending on the room type, the annual rent might be anywhere from $10,300 to $15,000.

The University of British Columbia is commonly considered to be among the world’s best universities. UBC has been responsible for the education of three Canadian prime ministers, as well as 74 Rhodes Scholars, 65 Olympic medalists (including 19 gold medals), and eight Nobel laureates. There have been 65 Olympic medals won by UBC varsity athletes, including 19 gold.
