The Gilbert and Marcia Kotzen Scholars Program is a merit award that is given out through a competitive process to reward the most brilliant and capable students at Simmons University who are interested in receiving an education that can change their lives.
This is the most prestigious prize that Simmons has to offer, and it recognizes brilliance achieved through a concentration on academic research, intellectual curiosity, and study in a foreign country.

Boston, Massachusetts is home to Simmons University, a tertiary education institution. At the graduate level, both men and women are welcome at the privately owned and operated Simmons University. Students at Simmons College have a choice between more than 60 different undergraduate majors, which allows for a more individualized educational experience. Before graduating and joining the workforce, every student is required to get experience through the completion of internships, clinical placements, fieldwork, or research projects throughout their time in school.
The blending of education for leadership in high-demand professional fields with the intellectual foundation provided by the liberal arts is a new paradigm in higher education, and Simmons was a pioneer in establishing this model. John Simmons, a wealthy textile manufacturer, established the college on the basis of his conviction that women ought to be provided with the chance to pursue education leading to careers in the public sphere. The university is well-known for its progressive educational philosophy; the first African American student graduated in 1914, and it was one of only a few private colleges that did not impose admission quotas on Jewish students during the 1900s. In addition, the university graduated its first student from the university in 1914. Recently, it became the third women’s institution in the country to open its doors to transgender students. A residential campus and an academic campus are located in close proximity to one another at Simmons College.
Both campuses serve the same purpose. In addition to the numerous residence halls, the campus also features a theater, a dining hall, a fitness center, and a health center. In addition, there are a large number of student groups and clubs, as well as athletic teams that go by the name of the Sharks. The undergraduate college offers more than fifty distinct programs, in addition to the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Studies, the School of Library and Information Science, the School of Management, the School of Social Work, and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. SeNSS is one of only 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships in the United Kingdom that is sponsored by the ESRC, and they will be offering a handful of fully-funded ESRC doctoral studentships beginning in September 2023. Scholarship Offer:
- The Kotzen Scholarship awards the recipient with full tuition, housing and board, as well as an additional $3,000 to be used toward academic endeavors such as research support, study abroad, and more. This scholarship takes precedence over any other merit scholarship that has been awarded in the past and is given to an undergraduate student who is planning to study full-time for the next four years.
The Gustafsson & Skrondal Visiting Scholarship is administered by the University of Oslo’s Centre for Educational Measurement (CEMO). As part of the visiting scholar program, CEMO and the University of Oslo host a number of young researchers from Norway and elsewhere each year.
Eligibility for Scholarship.
- Students who wish to apply for the Kotzen Scholarship need to ensure that they meet all of the following requirements:
- Put in an application as a first-year student for the upcoming autumn semester.
- Since Simmons is a test-optional institution, it is entirely up to you to decide whether or not you would like to include your standardized test scores with your application for admission. If applicants choose to send in their test scores, they should have a score of 28 or higher on the ACT and a score of 1300 or higher on the SAT.
- Tests of English Proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS, TOEFL basics, SAT/ACT scores, or the Duolingo English Test) must be submitted by those whose first language is not English.
- a grade point average of at least 3.3, a college preparatory curriculum that includes an intermediate level math course either during or before to your senior year of high school, and unweighted college admissions consideration.
- A record of having completed honors, advanced placement (AP), and international baccalaureate (IB) courses, if those programs were offered in their respective high schools at the time of application.
- Students that are able to fulfill the aforementioned requirements frequently express an interest in Simmons University’s Honors Program.

If a student enrolls in one of the degree programs offered by SOAS University of London, they may be eligible to receive a fee waiver award in the amount of £5,000. This award is available to students who are interested in receiving a degree from SOAS University of London.
Application Procedure
- In addition to a CV that details activities and involvements, the application requires a brief response to each of the questions that are listed below, as well as a formal essay in response to those questions. Students have until December 1 to email their applications to [email protected] with the subject line “Kotzen Application,” along with their resumes and essays in PDF or Word Doc format. The student’s entire name and the current date they were born should be included on each page of the paper.
- Note that it is the student’s obligation to present a working file in the appropriate format (PDF or Word), as we will not convert or accept incompatible files (such as Google Docs, Pages, etc.). For your convenience, please keep in mind that it is the student’s responsibility to do so.
- Essay prompts
- How would you use your additional annual award of $3,000 (for research support, summer internship tuition, study abroad, or short-term courses)? Please limit your response to no more than 250 words.
- Formal Essay (with a word limit of no more than 500): Some people are of the opinion that leaders are born, rather than made, while others are of the opinion that leaders are “made.” Compose an essay in which you take a position and defend it, arguing for it or against it. To bolster your case, cite a specific instance of effective leadership from either the past or from your own life as a way to illustrate what you mean.
- During the month of February, those candidates who have advanced to the final round of the scholarship consideration process will be questioned.
