A Ph.D. in Canada will give you the opportunity to work with leading experts and take advantage of modern, high-tech facilities.

Once you have obtained your doctorate, you will have the opportunity to take advantage of one of the most generous post-study work visa schemes in the world.

These are some of the things that make Canada an excellent option to study for a doctorate:

  • Cheaper International Fees: Doctoral studies in Canada are generally cheaper than in the United States, and most universities have fees about the same as for Canadian students.
  • Internationally Renowned Universities: Canada’s research is world-leading, with six institutions in the top 150 of all three major world rankings.
  • You will be able to live and work in Canada for up to three years and perhaps take a path to permanent residency or even citizenship.

As in other countries, the Canadian Ph.D. is the highest level of academic qualification that a student can achieve after a bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate master’s degree.

A Ph.D. is a 100% research degree that requires you to write a thesis of around 100,000 words adding new knowledge to your area of study.

There are a variety of doctoral degrees available alongside the traditional academic PhD, including professional doctorates such as the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Doctor of Education (EdD) qualifications.

In addition to the conventional doctoral process described above, some Canadian universities work with other international institutions to offer a collaborative route to a doctorate, known as ‘cotutelle’ (French for ‘co-tutoring’).

These programs involve a student spending time at two different universities, each of which is involved in supervising, examining, and awarding the doctoral project.

A cotutelle is a doctoral program offered jointly by two higher education institutions: one in Canada and the other in France. It allows students to obtain a double/joint doctorate delivered and recognized by both institutions.
