To be eligible for selection for this scholarship, candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Each year, Boston University welcomes approximately 20 exceptional alumni to the Boston Trustee Scholars program. Many of our existing Scholars earned perfect 4.0 GPAs in high school and typically rank in the top 5-10% of their class.
  • Along with excellent academic credentials, Boston University Scholar Trustees are creatively adventurous and reveal points of view, experiences, or achievements beyond the usual. They are, to put it another way, not just top students, but exceptional people. Boston University Scholar Trustees also become part of a unique university community that provides many cognitive, cultural, and social opportunities.
  • US citizens, permanent residents, and eligible non-citizens are considered for all merit scholarships and other scholarships.
  • International students are considered for this presidential scholarship only

How to Apply for a Boston University Trustee Scholarship Essay 

Submit the shared application for admission to at least one of the many college-level programs at Boston University along with additional supporting credentials by December 1.

  • Submit the Common or Coalition Application and all materials required for admission to one of BU’s undergraduate programs by the deadline date.
  • Complete the Trust Scholarship essay on the Common or Coalition Application as part of your application to BU.

The Trustee Scholarship Essay

Applicants must choose one of the two topics below and submit an essay, and write in 600 words or less, as part of their application through the Common or Coalition Application.

School can often seem like a job: a set of responsibilities, obligations, and tasks that you must complete. But Trustee Scholars are creative and curious, more than just obedient. Give us an insight into an intellectual quest or challenge that absorbs you, gives you joy, or sparks your curiosity, and tell us why.
  2. One of BU’s most distinguished alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote that “The time is always right to do the right thing.” Is there a time when you seek fairness and justice by challenging a social norm? Or, can you share an example of how you can imagine helping to create a more inclusive and fair community?

National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) Award

The offer is for students who earn recognition from the National Hispanic Recognition Program and who have exceptionally strong academic records. Students must submit a copy of their NHPR letter to the BU by January 2nd. It is worth $20,000 for successful candidates.

College of Robotics Engineers FIRST

The scholarship is for College of Engineering applicants who have participated in at least one season with a FIRST Robotics team. Its value accumulates up to $20,000 for successful candidates.
