About the Scholarship Sponsor:

Washington State Institution is a public research university that was established in the year 1890. It is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities. It is believed that the institution is one of the oldest universities in the Western United States. Additionally, it is the state’s second-largest institution by student enrollment. Formerly known as the School of Science of the State of Washington, the current name of the university dates back to its founding. The institution and its faculty have benefited tremendously from the substantial financing provided by the Atomic Energy Commission Grants program. There were only three other medical schools in the state of Washington, and one of those schools was the university’s medical school. A Board of Regents serves as the governing body for the university. There are now ten people serving on the board of directors.

The total land area covered by the campus is equivalent to 620 acres. Paul Thiry, a well-known architect, is responsible for the design and construction of this building, which features a Neo-Georgian aesthetic. The physical facilities of the campus are always kept in good condition. The students are given access to any and all facilities that may be necessary. The Thompson Hall, the Steven Hall, and the Bryan Hall are the three halls that may be found on this campus. These structures have a reputation for being the oldest ones on the campus. The College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Department of Foreign Languages are both located at Thompson Hall on campus.

Both Steven Hall and Bryan Hall are located on the campus of the university. Steven Hall is a dorm for female students, and Bryan Hall is a tower with four sides that houses the wall clock. In addition, there are residence halls on the campus, such as the Hill hall, which is comprised of four buildings, the Northside hall, which is comprised of five buildings, the Southcentral hall, which is comprised of six buildings, the Upper-division hall, which is comprised of six buildings, and the Complex hall, which is comprised of three buildings. The housing residences on campus have access to all of the required services and facilities provided by the college.

The institution provides 78 degree programs leading to a master’s degree, 65 degree programs leading to a doctoral degree, and 3 degree programs leading to a professional degree in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. The curriculum is comprised of 65 different departments that are organized into ten different colleges. It is well recognized that the university has a calm atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Because it has a total enrolment of 29,686 students and an undergraduate enrollment of 24,470, it is considered to be the second-largest institution of higher education in the state of Washington. Betty Feves, a well-known artist; Art Gilmore, a voice actor; Gary Larson, a well-known cartoonist; Sherman Alexie, a film director; Scott MacDonald, an actor; Frances Yeend, an opera singer; Paul Allen, a co-founder of Microsoft; Clint Cole, a co-founder of Heart stream; Paul Enquist, an Olympic gold medalist in men’s double sculling; Philip Abelson (Molecular evolutionist)
