The deteriorating infrastructure is one of the key factors to the growing difficulty in meeting the various and complicated requirements of today’s electricity systems, which is becoming increasingly more difficult as time goes on. Not only does this have an effect on reliability, but it also presents system operators with a significant conundrum: they must decide whether to extend the life of their assets or whether to replace them and make them more up to date. Testing, condition monitoring, and diagnostics allow operators to manage their assets in a timely and efficient manner. They also guarantee that plant and equipment fulfill design and operational criteria. There are many different approaches to condition monitoring that can be utilized for high voltage equipment. Some examples of these approaches include the detection of partial discharges, the measuring of vibrations, and thermal imaging. When considered separately, each of these methods has a set of advantages and disadvantages that, in many instances, compromises their capacity to give a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of the state of an asset when utilized on its own. In addition, the efficient utilization of these systems calls for the ongoing collection and evaluation of significant amounts of data by engineers who possess specialized knowledge, frequently making use of specialized instruments and software.

This fact can make the adoption and implementation of these systems challenging. The goal of the research will be to develop an all-encompassing condition monitoring solution for the components of power system apparatus. This solution will combine aspects of electrical and non-electrical techniques and be able to provide automated condition diagnosis utilizing artificial intelligence. In the beginning, it will involve the collection and analysis of data from laboratory studies on a smaller scale in order to establish a potential correlation between the various monitoring techniques as well as the capabilities of sensors and signal processing algorithms. The knowledge that was acquired as a result of the inquiry described above will serve as the foundation upon which the layers of deep neural networks will be built in order to automate the process of condition diagnosis and reporting using machine learning. The collected data will be used to train the models that have been developed so that they are able to successfully identify incipient faults and categorize the condition of equipment based on severity without the need for human intervention, and ultimately provide a prognosis of asset life expectancy.
