The Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh is pleased to announce the availability of one full scholarship for suitable female applicants from Africa. The scholarship can be used to pursue an MSc in Africa and International Development and then a PhD in African Studies, or it can be used to go directly into a PhD program if that is what is deemed to be more appropriate.

This fellowship was created to provide a combined package in order to give individuals who may not believe that they have adequate research experience to embark on a PhD the opportunity to gain the footing that they need with an MSc. The Master of Science year acts as a stepping stone between undergraduate studies and doctoral work. We have high hopes that the comprehensive package of support would sway the opinions of some individuals who previously did not believe that obtaining a PhD was possible. One of the primary objectives of the scholarship is to broaden the pool of academics hailing from African countries who are actively engaged in innovative and significant research within the field of African Studies.

About the Scholarship Provider:

As it was established in 1096, it is the oldest municipal foundation in the history of the English-speaking world and the sixth-oldest university in the United Kingdom. It is also the oldest university in Europe. The illustrious Institute of Edinburgh may be found in Edinburgh, which is located in Scotland. The University, which currently has more than 44,000 enrolled students and five separate sites located all across the city, is in the process of quickly developing. These organizations have some of the most impressive art collections, rare book and manuscript collections, musical instrument collections, natural history specimens, geological specimens, anatomical model collections, and rare publication collections in the world.

The University of Edinburgh will make housing offers to first-year students who do not currently live in Edinburgh if they do not already have one. There are around 25 hotels and various accomodation alternatives within a short walking distance or easily accessible by public transit of Edinburgh’s central business district. Pollock Hall is located approximately two kilometers from the heart of the city and features 1,900 guest rooms in addition to on-site catering. In addition to the fundamental restrooms, there are also private toilets and bathrooms that guests can share with other guests. There are also a number of dorms and flats dispersed throughout the city that give students the option of self-catering. The maximum number of people that may be accommodated in an apartment is six, and each unit can be found throughout the city.

Students at the University of Edinburgh who are seeking for private housing can take advantage of a free accommodation counseling service that is provided by the university at the beginning of each academic year. During the course of the last few years, 83% of their research has been considered as either world-leading or globally remarkable, and they have been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Award five times in total. In addition, since 1967, the company’s commercial service has assisted more than 500 enterprises in launching their operations successfully.

Students from countries other than the United Kingdom make up the vast majority of Edinburgh University’s total student body, which consists of over 26,000 undergraduates and 15,000 graduate students. These students have access to the school’s remarkable pedagogical and educational resources, and they are encouraged to make full use of them. The institution received the Queen’s Anniversary Award in 2013 in recognition of its pioneering distance learning master’s programs, which have transformed postgraduate education for trainee surgeons and earned the university the honor. The institution was the first in the United Kingdom to provide students from all over the world with access to massive open online courses (MOOCs). Universities are frequently at the forefront of developing ground-breaking new methods of teaching and learning. It is able to make a significant, long-lasting, and socially responsible contribution to Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the rest of the world thanks to its staff of over 15,000 people, of which 36% are international scholars.

The Institute for Cardiovascular Science at this university was presented with the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2015 for its research on coronary heart disease, which resulted in significant drops in mortality rates as a direct result of the development of new treatments and guidelines. This award was presented to the Centre as recognition for the efforts that they have made to lower those rates. This educational establishment has a long history marked by an abundance of academic achievement, inventiveness, and originality. Both Professor Peter Higgs, who discovered the Higgs boson theory and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, and the Roslin Institute, which is affiliated with the institution, are widely regarded as pioneers in this subject. Professor Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. The most recent evaluation of the quality of university research in the United Kingdom found that 38% of the institution’s efforts were assessed to be world-leading, while 45% of the institution’s efforts were deemed to be internationally good.
