One scholarship of up to 3 years is financed by the Gerda-Henkel-Foundation University of Hamburg to a Nigerian national to work both in Nigeria and with the research team settled in Hamburg on a research project. The research project covers the looting, collecting and exhibition of the bronze sculptures from Benin. The University of Hamburg, founded on March 1919, is looking for a historian who wishes to pursue research for a Ph.D. in history, involving in the occupation of Benin City by British forces in 1897 and the looting of city. Concurrently, two German historians will conduct an in-depth study of the complex history of the Benin artworks.

It is mandatory that the winner of the Nigerian scholarship will engage with the other two historians and the research group in general. Hence, an extended residence in Hamburg of 8-12 months is required. The project is financed by the Gerda-Henkel-Foundation with a monthly scholarship according to the qualification and standing of the candidate. The scholarship is available only to pursue a Ph.D. program. The scholarship is fully funded and can be taken in Nigeria and Germany. The Germany doctorates enjoy an outstanding reputation and Germany’s research institutions and universities welcome international researchers offering them exquisite opportunities to study. Nigerian, historian Ph.D. students who find this scholarship vital for their professional evolution should not restrain themselves from applying to it. As mentioned before, the Ph.D. program is fully funded and it can be also taken in Germany and Nigeria.

How one can apply? Entrants must provide an application including a CV, a 5 pages provisional proposal with ideas about the individual research project, a sample of prior writing and two letters of reference. The two letters of references should include the names and email addresses of the referees. Additionally, they must provide a short statement explaining the motivation for this particular research project. Selection of the candidates will start on August 13th 2017. The scholarship will be open until the position is filled.
