Scholarship details
Students who are entering their third year of study in chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering at one of South Australia’s three public universities are eligible to apply for one of up to four two-year scholarships that are made available by the Playford Trust thanks to the generous support of Nyrstar. The scholarship consists of a paid work experience lasting between eight and twelve weeks at Nyrstar’s Port Pirie Smelter during the summer break between third and fourth years of study. Placements take place before third-year and fourth-year classes begin.
Scholarship recipients will get a generous payment for each work placement, but they will be responsible for covering their own living expenses while they are participating in the work placement. Nyrstar is a global multi-metals firm that holds a leadership position in the markets for zinc and lead and is extending its presence in additional base and precious metals. In addition to producing refined commodity grade lead and lead alloys, zinc oxide fume, copper cathode, silver and gold, sulphuric acid, and other byproduct metals, Nyrstar Port Pirie is the largest single stream primary lead smelter in the world.

- excited about the mining and metalworking sectors
- someone who is either a citizen of Australia or a permanent resident of Australia and a resident of South Australia
- planning to make South Australia their permanent home and/or likely to contribute to the state’s economy
- one who excelled academically as an undergrad
- good moral fiber. Students who show signs of prospective leadership roles will be given priority.
- Indigenous pupils and those from the mid-north of South Australia will also be given priority. All students who meet the requirements should, nevertheless, apply.
- An applicant’s supervisor or academic reference (e.g., dean of school/faculty, or lecturer) must offer a recommendation outlining the applicant’s accomplishments, character, and leadership potential.
- Nominations from students at any of South Australia’s three institutions will be taken into consideration by the Playford Trust, which may approve some or all of the submitted applications. The final decisions will be made by a committee comprised of Nyrstar and the Playford Trust.
