At the University of California, Berkeley, a memorial fund has been created in honor of Emeka Kalu Ezera to provide financial assistance to graduate students coming from African nations that are located south of the Sahara. The monies from the endowment are given to the Center for African Studies so that they can provide assistance to student researchers who are pursuing doctoral degrees and specializing in African studies.

The Ezera competition and the Rocca Fellowship competition (See in Program Webpage link below) have been combined for the aim of streamlining the administrative process. Those who are awarded the Ezera may also be eligible for funding from the Rocca endowment. There should only be one application submitted. In order to be considered for the Emeka Kalu Ezera fellowship, you will need to specify which African nation you are a native of in the section provided on the application for the fellowship.

About the Scholarship Sponsor:

Established in 1868, UC Berkeley is one of the oldest and most prestigious public research universities in the world. It has a reputation for being among the top state universities in the country. The university’s 1,232-acre San Francisco Bay Area campus is massive. Classes run on a semester system at the university. Programs for incoming freshmen are available at each of the nine research universities. Both the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Space Sciences Laboratory are located there; they are among the finest scientific institutions in the world. In total, scientists from the institution managed to locate 16 different elements.

When the Association of American Universities was founded in 1891, Berkeley was one of the 14 founding institutions. At this university, there are about three hundred and fifty degree programs and one hundred and sixty courses specifically designed for first-year students. Doctoral-level undergraduates are welcome at the university, as well. Many students choose to study economics, biology, or computer science at the institution. The Berkeley campus encompasses 1,232 acres in the Los Angeles harbor area, and more than 95% of first-year students choose to live there. More than a thousand student organizations, ranging from political groups to sports clubs, provide students a wealth of information and experience. Sixty-five percent or more of its first-year undergraduates get some form of financial aid.

The University of California, Berkeley, is home to 14 different schools and colleges, including the prestigious Graduate School of Journalism and a number of other specialized post-graduate institutions. In addition to the Haas School of Business and the College of Engineering, UC Berkeley is home to the Graduate School of Education and the School of Law. Forbes ranked Berkley as the fifth best university for its value to students in 2018. This list ranks institutions according to a variety of factors, including the average salary of graduates, the percentage of students who complete their degrees, the average amount of debt carried by graduates, the quality of the institution, and the ease with which students from low-income backgrounds are admitted. Over 3,000 students annually receive funding from over 900 different organizations and the University of California, Berkeley in the form of Undergraduate Scholarships.

Current faculty include four Pulitzer Prize winners and eight Nobel Prize winners. A total of 31,348 undergraduates and 11,856 graduate students make up its 43,204 total enrollment. There are 107 Nobel laureates among Berkeley’s alumni, faculty, and researchers. There were also 14 Fields Medalists and 25 Turing Award recipients. They’ve also racked up 207 Olympic medals, 45 MacArthur Foundation grants, and 20 Pulitzer Prizes. Graduates from this institution took home 17 medals overall (11 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze) at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. This illustrates Berkley’s athletic prowess as well. Author Jack London, journalist Gregory Peck, Pakistani leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, writer Joan Didion, and Women’s World Cup-winning soccer player Alex Morgan are just a few notable alumni of the University of California, Berkley.
