Are you an international student who dreams of studying in the Netherlands? Do you want to experience this country’s rich culture, innovative education, and diverse opportunities? If yes, you might be interested in applying for the NL Scholarship, a generous and prestigious award that can help you achieve your academic and professional goals.

The NL Scholarship is a scholarship program that aims to attract and support talented and motivated students worldwide who want to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the Netherlands. The scholarship is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and administered by Nuffic, the Dutch organization for internationalization in education. The scholarship covers the selected students’ tuition fees and living expenses for one academic year. It provides them with mentoring, networking, and cultural activities to enhance their learning experience.

Scholarship Provider

The scholarship provider is the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, responsible for developing the education system, promoting culture and science, and safeguarding democracy and the rule of law in the Netherlands. The ministry works with various partners, such as Nuffic, to foster international cooperation and exchange in education and research and to support the mobility and integration of international students and scholars.

Eligible Applicants

The eligible applicants are students with non-EU/EEA nationality who have not previously studied or worked in the Netherlands. The applicants must also meet the academic and language requirements of their chosen Dutch higher education institution. They must have applied for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s program in any field except for arts and design. The applicants must demonstrate their motivation, academic excellence, and potential impact in their field and society.

Host Country

The host country is the Netherlands, a small but influential country in Western Europe known for its flat landscape, tulip fields, windmills, cheese, and bicycles. The Netherlands is also a global leader in innovation, sustainability, and social justice and has a high-quality and internationally oriented-education system that offers a wide range of programs in English. The Netherlands is a welcoming and diverse country that values freedom, tolerance, and creativity and offers international students a vibrant and stimulating environment.

Scholarship Worth

The scholarship worth is €10,000 for one academic year, which covers the selected students’ tuition fees and living expenses. The scholarship is paid in two installments: the first at the beginning of the academic year and the second after the mid-term evaluation. The scholarship also includes access to the Holland Alumni Network. This platform connects former and current international students in the Netherlands, offering them various benefits and opportunities, such as career events, mentoring, and alumni associations.

Level and Field of Study

The level and field of study are bachelor’s or master’s degrees in any field of study except for arts and design. The scholarship is available for more than 2,100 programs in English offered by more than 100 Dutch higher education institutions, ranging from universities of applied sciences to research universities. The programs cover various disciplines, such as engineering, business, law, health, social sciences, and humanities.

How to Apply

The application process for the NL Scholarship consists of two steps: first, the applicants must apply for a bachelor’s or master’s program at a Dutch higher education institution of their choice and indicate their interest in the scholarship. Second, the applicants must submit a separate online application for the scholarship through the Study in Holland website and upload the required documents, such as a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, and proof of admission. The deadline for both steps is 1 May 2024.

Countries that can Apply

The countries that can apply for the NL Scholarship are outside the European Union and the European Economic Area, except for Switzerland and Suriname. The scholarship aims to increase the diversity and representation of international students in the Netherlands and foster relations between the Netherlands and other countries. The scholarship also encourages the students to contribute to developing their own countries and regions after their studies.
