Are you seeking a way to pursue your academic goals in a foreign country without worrying about the costs? Do you want to learn more about China’s rich and diverse culture while studying at a world-class university? If your answer is yes, you should apply for the full scholarship the Shanghai Government of China offers.

The Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) is a prestigious award that covers all the expenses of international students who want to study in China. Every year, the Shanghai Government selects 40 outstanding students from different countries and regions to receive this scholarship. The SGS aims to promote the internationalization of education in Shanghai and to foster the exchange and cooperation between China and other countries.

The SGS is available for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in any field or study area. Depending on your interests and preferences, you can choose from various universities in Shanghai. You will have the opportunity to study with some of the best professors and researchers in China and interact with other students from different backgrounds and cultures.

The benefits of the SGS are as follows:

  • Full tuition waiver for the duration of your program.
  • Free accommodation on campus or a monthly subsidy for off-campus housing.
  • Monthly stipend to cover your living expenses, which varies depending on the level of your program.
  • Comprehensive health insurance to cover your medical needs.
  • One-time settlement allowance to help you settle in Shanghai.

To be eligible for the SGS, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a citizen of a country other than China and hold a valid passport.
  • Be in good health and meet the physical examination standards of China.
  • Have excellent academic performance and potential in your chosen field of study.
  • Meet the age limit for your program: Bachelor’s degree (under 25 years old and have a high school diploma), master’s degree (under 35 years old and have a bachelor’s degree), PhD (under 40 years old and have a master’s degree).
  • Not be a recipient of any other scholarship or financial aid from China or other sources.
  • Apply online through the Shanghai Government Scholarship website and submit all the required documents before the deadline.

The documents you need to prepare are:

  • Use the application form for the SGS, which you can fill out and print online.
  • The highest diploma and transcripts of your previous studies must be original or notarized copies. You must provide a certified translation if they are not in Chinese or English.
  • The study plan or research proposal should be 800 words for master’s and doctoral applicants and 500 words for bachelor’s applicants. You should explain your academic background, research interests, objectives, and plans for your future career.
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors or experts in your field should be original or notarized copies. They should be written in Chinese or English and include the referees’ contact information.
  • Copy of your passport and a recent passport-sized photo.
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form, which you can download from the SGS website. You must complete it and attach the original reports of your blood tests and chest X-ray. You must also sign and stamp the form with the seal of the hospital.
  • Language proficiency certificate, which can be either an HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) certificate or an IELTS or TOEFL (English Proficiency Test) certificate, depending on the language of instruction of your program. You should meet the minimum score required by your university.
  • Other documents that your university or program may require include a portfolio, a sample of your work, or a certificate of awards or honors.
