The scholarships for the Diploma in Digital Tools for Tourism – UTEC begin with the idea of traveling and being inspired at home and with a cell phone in hand. Acquire tickets, book a stay, arrive at the hotel or a restaurant with an online reservation code, and when you return home, back in the armchair, rate the tourist services from your cell phone, rewarding the best services with a good score. From start to finish, a tourism trip, technology through.

In 2022 the Diploma in Digital Tools for Tourism begins.
This new way of consuming tourism is already part of the routine of many tourists, a trend that grows every year. Hotels without receptionists augmented reality in historic centers or protected areas, and artificial intelligence in gastronomy are no longer topics for the future but are part of tourism today.
Scholarships available: 50 scholarships.
UTEC starts the courses of this online training in the second semester of 2022.

ROLE OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY OF URUGUAY (UTEC)
To face the challenge of digital transformation in tourism and have more tools to take advantage of its opportunities, the Technological University of Uruguay (UTEC) launches the first Diploma in Digital Tools for Tourism with the support from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Uruguayan Agency for International Cooperation (AUCI).

Digital transformation is necessary to be able to face a long list of challenges (environmental, economic, and social) in this post-pandemic world, and this training aims to provide elements to those who work in the tourism sector to help incorporate innovative processes in Uruguay and the region and avoid lag.

The World Tourism Organization estimates that in 2020, more than 1.1 billion dollars were lost in tourism income, and between 100 and 120 million jobs. In Uruguay, the impact on income can be understood if one takes into account that in 2019 USD 1,750 million was entered and that, in 2020, having only the data for the first quarter, they entered only 38% of the income of the previous year according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.

ABOUT THE DIPLOMA
UTEC begins the courses of this online training in the second semester of 2022 with 50 scholarships financed by the OAS.

The duration is 200 hours in six months, with a weekly dedication of about three hours of autonomous work on the platform for each hour of the virtual class online.
The Diploma has national and international teachers with outstanding experience and knowledge in the field.

The training is aimed at tourism professionals and consultants, public officials, entrepreneurs, and businessmen linked to the sector.

It is also aimed at advisers to tourism, government, or private organizations, as well as professionals linked to the technology design, programming, and management sector.
Graduates of tourism, architecture, and urban planning or other careers could also participate in this diploma.

In Uruguay there are already training courses linked to tourism, some linked to management, others to business management with aspects that deal with technology, but there were none specifically on technologies for tourism.

UTEC PROPOSAL
The UTEC proposal “has the advantage that it deals specifically with the issue of digital transformation in tourism, from a strategic and operational point of view.

We will have people who graduate from the diploma who will understand the main technologies that make digital transformation and its applications in tourism to provide tourist services and manage destinations intelligently”, explained Cristian Pos, Academic Coordinator of the Diploma in Digital Tools for Tourism at UTEC. Pos has a degree in International Relations and a master’s degree specializing in tourism management.

A NEW ROLE FOR THE TOURISM SECTOR
In the market there are engineers or people dedicated to technology hired by the tourism sector to provide solutions, there are also people from the tourism sector who must define these contracts and finally, there are public organizations that seek to support the transformation. “We need people who are in the field to be trained so that tourist destinations, companies, and workers are digitally transformed” and for these three profiles to dialogue more with each other, “we have to create a new role, a new head in the companies and in the tourism sector that plays a pivotal role between tourism and technological knowledge,” said Pos.

“Uruguay has advantages” such as the high level of digitization, although challenges remain, added Pos.
