The Lilly Endowment’s Community Scholarship Program aims to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana and increase the capacity of Indiana’s community foundations to improve the quality of life for Indiana’s residents. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to carefully read and apply.

What is the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship?

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program is a statewide program administered by local community foundations throughout Indiana. The Community Foundation administers the program locally in conjunction with the Community Foundation Alliance and local high schools, while the Indiana Independent Colleges (ICI) provides state oversight of the program.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program has assisted more than 4,400 Indiana high school graduates from each of Indiana’s 92 counties with more than $372 million in tuition to earn baccalaureate degrees at Indiana colleges and universities.

About Lilly Endowment Community

The Lilly Endowment is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by members of the Lilly family. In accordance with the wishes of the founding members, the Lilly Endowment exists to support the causes of education, religion, and community development.

Since its inception, the Lilly Endowment has remained steadfast in its belief that education at all levels is essential to the personal, civic, and economic well-being of Indiana residents and communities.

The scholarships are the result of a state initiative by the Lilly Endowment to help raise the level of educational achievement in Indiana; increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and encourage and support the efforts of current and former Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana’s business, government, educational, nonprofit, and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana in general and in local communities across the state.

How to Apply for Lilly Endowment Scholarship (Application Procedures)

However, part of the Lilly Foundation scholarship application includes four short essays, and the committee places a lot of weight on answering these questions, as they are the first chance for applicants to really shine.

Students are advised to have a trusted counselor, teacher, or other mentor review their answers before submitting the application. The indications are listed below:

  • Identify a specific change that you think would improve your high school and explain why.
  • Identify a specific change that you think would improve your community and explain why.
  • If you could have chosen a different time in history to be born, when would it have been and why?
  • Is there anything else about your life or experiences that you would like the selection committee to know?

Applications will be blind-reviewed and independently scored by members of a Lilly scholarship committee at each community high school to identify semifinalists. The number of semifinalists will reflect the size of each school’s top class.

The Community Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee will review applications from qualified semifinalists from each school. Applicants will be evaluated on Academic Ability, School Activities, Achievement and Recognition, Community Service, Work and Internship History, Leadership, and Overall impression.

In October, each finalist will be interviewed and the scores from the interview will be combined with the score from the written application. Finalist rankings, along with the committee’s recommendations for scholarship recipients, will be sent to the Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. Finalists must be available for personal interviews with the selection committee.

Interested candidates should first contact their local community foundation or, if applicable, their high school counselor for detailed information about the program.
