What You Need To Know About The Jim Ovia Foundation Scholarships
Through our various programs, the Jim Ovia Foundation aims to equip the future of our African community by increasing the knowledge and skill base of our youth. The Jim Ovia Foundation has supported thousands of college students and entrepreneurs by providing affordable grants and scholarships.
The Jim Ovia Scholars Program was founded in 1998. It is fully funded by Mr. Jim Ovia to help exceptional young Nigerians financially. The scholarship was once known as the MUSTA scholarship. Eligible fellows receive support for their undergraduate and graduate studies for the duration of their program, which also includes tuition and maintenance fees.
The program offers an average of 100 opportunities annually for new applicants, while renewing applicants also receive support annually; this is contingent on meeting all scholarship eligibility requirements. Since October 2010, Mr. OVIA has invested over 100 million naira in this program to encourage 1,500 beneficiaries and counting.
By establishing the Jim Ovia Scholarship, Mr. Ovia hoped to create a network of future leaders within Nigeria who can compete internationally with their peers, bring fresh ideas and creativity, and who are committed to improving the lives and circumstances of people in their respective communities.
Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship
The Jim Ovia Foundation Leadership Scholarship (JOFLS) is just one part of the Jim Ovia Scholarships. However, rather than being funded by the foundation alone, it is offered in partnership with the Africa-America Institute (AAI).
JOFLS is awarded based on intellectual ability, leadership ability and also a desire to use your wisdom to contribute to society in Nigeria by providing service to your community and applying your knowledge and talent to improve the lifestyle of others .
Over time, it is estimated that Jim Ovia Scholarship recipients will become leaders in helping to address challenges around healthcare, technology, and funding, all areas in which the foundation is deeply engaged.
Level / field of study
The scholarship is intended for students pursuing undergraduate studies in any STEM course: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics or related courses.
Host nationality
The scholarship is organized by Jim Ovia Foundation, in association with AAI.
Eligible Nationality
The scholarship welcomes applications from African students residing in any African country, embracing inclusivity and diversity across the continent.
Nonetheless, only a limited number of 35 applicants will be selected, with a significant proportion, twenty-five percent, specifically reserved for Nigerian students. This allocation ensures equitable representation and recognizes the talent and potential among Nigerian scholars.

- Comprehensive Scholarships – The Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship will provide tuition, room and board for undergraduate study.
- Career Support and Opportunities : Scholarship recipients will receive career counseling and support while they are still students and also after graduation.
- AAI Global Alumni Network : Recipients of the Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship will graduate into one of the most prestigious alumni networks. AAI alumni include prominent leaders in many sectors of Africa and the world and include two sitting presidents. Scholarship recipients will be connected to this network for potential opportunities, mentorship, and the ability to continue to develop the continent collectively.
Who Is Eligible for the Jim Ovia Foundation Leaders Scholarship?
As stated above, these scholarships are awarded based on personal intellectual ability, leadership ability, and a desire to contribute to society at large to improve the lives of others.
However, students must also meet the following requirements:
- Must be a citizen of an African country residing in Africa
- Exhibit a strong academic record and a penchant for high achievement
- Demonstrate financial need
- Submit an active record of youth leadership within your community
- Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of proficiency in English at a higher level from the University.
