Japan Foundation United Nations University JFUNU Scholarships for Ph.D. students from developing countries in the field of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace at United Nations University ISP, Japan.

The Japan Foundation for United Nations University (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance, and they will be considered as candidates for the award of the scholarship.

The program addresses pressing global issues of sustainability, climate change, development, peace-building, and human rights through an innovative interdisciplinary approach that integrates the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

The program is intended for recent graduates, professionals, and practitioners, offering the unique opportunity to study at a global university within the framework of the United Nations.

It provides students with the knowledge and skills to make important contributions toward solving global issues, whether through employment by UN agencies, other international organizations, governments, civil society, or the private sector.

The Japan Foundation identifies the needs of individuals engaged in various cultural fields, creates opportunities, and supports programs and events.

Thus, A limited number of Ph.D. scholarships (covering tuition fees and living costs) for a maximum of 36 months are awarded to outstanding applicants who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and have a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-IAS research themes.

ABOUT THE SPONSOR:

The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 by an Act of the National Diet as a special legal entity to undertake international dissemination of Japanese culture, and became an Independent Administrative Institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1 October 2003 under the “Independent Administrative Institution Japan Foundation Law”.

The Japan Foundation aims toward comprehensive and effective development of its international cultural exchange programs in the following categories;

  1. Promotion of (Japanese) arts and cultural exchange
  2. Promotion of (overseas) Japanese-language education (the JLPT exam)
  3. Promotion of (overseas) Japanese studies and intellectual exchange – Japan Foundation Information Centers collect and provide information about international exchange and international cultural exchange standard-bearers.

LEVEL / FIELD OF STUDY

The scholarship is open to Ph.D. students to undertake a study in Japan.

HOST NATIONALITY:

The scholarship is to be taken in Japan at United Nations University ISP Japan

ELIGIBLE NATIONALITY:

The scholarship is available to Ph.D. Students from Developing countries.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS:

The JFUNU scholarship covers the full tuition fees and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.

JFUNU Scholarships for Ph.D. Students from Developing Countries Eligibility

To apply for Japan Foundation for UNU Ph.D. For scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

‣ Applicants for the Ph.D. in Sustainability Science are required to have met all of the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:

  • Applicants must be from developing countries and can demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
  • Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa are NOT eligible for the scholarship.
  • Applicants who want to pursue a second Ph.D. degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship.
  • Strong interest in sustainability studies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to studying and understanding global issues;
  • A completed Master’s degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-IAS research themes or
  • Two completed Master’s degrees, at least one of which must be in disciplines related to sustainability studies;
  • Those who expect to receive a second Master’s degree before the entrance period – September 2022 – may also apply.
  • A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale on at least one of the Master’s degrees earned; and

‣ English language proficiency: The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-IAS are: 600 in TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT); 100 in TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT) and 7.0 in IELTS – Academic format
