The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust offers its commitment to fostering academic excellence and cultural exchange through the Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust Fellowship offered annually and a remarkable opportunity for outstanding Pakistan Researchers who aim to embark on a transformative journey in their career advancement and research. The fellowship aims to dedicate an academic pursuit and to promote intellectual collaboration.

The fellowship is an annual award tailored for exceptional Pakistani Scholars who want to gain and enrich their experience in the span of a month’s journey in one of the prestigious schools of Oriental and African Studies also known as SOAS. The successful students will have the privilege to delve into an array of academic resources, engage in rigorous discussions, and cultivate their connections to the global academic communities.

The fellowship program will be hosted by the SOAS South Asia Institute, the epicenter of cultural diversity and academic brilliance. The program will commence between the months of January to May 2024, The three-month fellowship is strategically timed to offer the most conducive environments for collaboration and intellectual research. During the fellowship period, the successful applicants will be surrounded by professional researchers, academics, and experts who collectively form a vibrant academic environment.

About Charles Wallace Trusts 

The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust (CWPT) was founded in 1981 and registered in the United Kingdom. The trust was administered first by the British Council and is currently running as independent, however, the British Council continuously provides support to the United Kingdom Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.

Charles Wallace formed the Trust using the funds from his legacy, Charles was a British Entrepreneur who thrived his success in India during the 19th century. He passed in London at the age of 60 in 1916, Charles has served as the foundation of the trust. Charles Wallace includes a specific directive that states that all his possessions great and small will be acquired by the people and should be returned to the people. This has become a way to create a foundation which dedicated to one of the four nations.

Scholarship Eligibility 

Before proceeding with the application, interested candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the scholarship awards:

  • The applicants must be nationals and residing in Pakistan at the time of the application.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree and must be working in eligible Pakistan Fields such as Arts, Humanities, and social science which are only supported by the SOAS
  • The trust encourages all applicants who focus on research in modern and contemporary Pakistan in any of SSAI; ‘s areas such as Citizenship, Resources Under Pressure, Rights and Inequality, Politics, Culture, Region, Intervention and Interaction in Arts, Knowledge and Power.
  • The applicants must not be sponsored in any fellowships, or admitted to any of the Higher Education in the United Kingdom which also includes SOAS.
  • The applicants must be at the early or middle stage of their careers.
  • The candidates must demonstrate their English Language ability and must have good communication skills in oral and written English.
  • Applicants are required to state if they are recipients of any other grants or other fellowship/grant applications. Failure to state this may result in the fellowship being withdrawn.

The three-month fellowship will be intended for the following:

  • Actively contribute to the research environment of the Institute.
  • Enable SSAI members and research students to engage with prominent academics from external to SOAS.
  • Developing a connection with academic institutions in Pakistan.
  • Facilitate collaborative research opportunities for academics from Pakistan to work jointly with SSAI colleagues.

Application Process

The application must be completed which consists of the following:

  • Complete the application form including their list of publications and a complete description of their proposed research that explains why SOAS is an ideal research venue.
  • Two letters of recommendation

All application materials must be submitted through the provided email at the official website of the provider. The email must be submitted with the subject line “Charles Wallace Trust Pakistan Fellowship 2023/24”

Three shortlisted candidates will be emailed and invited to an online interview. Keep in mind that all applicants will be notified of the result of their application, the application that was submitted incomplete will not be considered and contacted.

Application Deadline 

The deadline to complete and submit the application is until September 18, 2023. Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Award 

Selected applicants will be supported with the following:

  • £900 for the visa fee and travel cost
  • £1,500 Monthly Stipend
