The A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (AGS) offers financial support for a doctoral or engineering doctorate (EngD) program at autonomous universities in Singapore, covering up to four years of study. As an AGS recipient, the scholars will have the opportunity to engage in industry-oriented and user-inspired research and development projects. Additionally, you will be eligible for a 12-month overseas attachment during your studies to gain international exposure.

Upon completion of your Ph.D. or EngD studies, AGS scholars can apply for the A*STAR International Fellowship (AIF). The fellowship will provide an additional opportunity to pursue post-doctoral training at renowned overseas universities or research institutions, allowing you to further enhance your research skills and broaden the student’s global network.

Scholarship Eligibility 

Before proceeding with the application, the students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants can be Singaporeans or nationals from other countries.
  • Non-Singaporean applicants should have completed or be on track to complete a degree from a Singapore autonomous-university.
  • Candidates must meet the criteria and apply for admission to a Ph.D. or EngD program at an autonomous university.
  • A minimum of a 2nd Upper-Class Honours degree or its equivalent in a relevant discipline is required or should be on track to be obtained.
  • Applicants in their final semester of undergraduate studies can apply, but the scholarship will only be awarded if they achieve at least a 2nd Upper-Class Honours or equivalent results that meet A*STAR’s requirements.
  • A strong interest in pursuing a research career is essential.

Please note that the mentioned eligibility criteria are not exhaustive, and A*STAR reserves the right to include additional selection criteria based on current scholarship policies, which may be subject to changes without prior notice.

Application Process 

  • The application can be accessed in an online portal provided on the official webpage of the provider. The applicants are encouraged to apply for admission at any of the autonomous universities in Singapore. The award will be conditional upon the applicants obtaining confirmation of placement at any of the partnered universities.
  • It is important to note that the selection of a Ph.D. or EngD supervisor(s), project, and university for successful candidates is subject to approval by ASTAR. To find a list of ASTAR-approved supervisors, please refer to the “Research Areas and Supervisors” on the official page of the provider. They strive to ensure that candidates are matched with appropriate supervisors and projects that align with A*STAR’s research objectives and priorities.
  • The applicants are required to submit a minimum of two referee reports, along with a detailed description of their proposed research area and all relevant academic credentials. The selection process involves at least 2 rounds of interviews, which will include top management from either the Biomedical Research Council or the Science & Engineering Research Council, as well as researchers from A*STAR’s Research Entities. These interviews are conducted to assess the suitability of candidates and ensure a thorough evaluation of their potential for the scholarship.

Scholarship Benefits 

The successful applicants will be awarded with the following support for up to four years:

  • Fully-funded tuition fees
  • Monthly allowance
  • Other allowances include books, computers, conference fees, and thesis allowance.
  • Support for up to 12 months in overseas attachments
