The Ph.D. program offered by the Kroc Institute equips students with the skills necessary to become outstanding scholars and teachers who contribute to an expanding body of knowledge and practice pertaining to peacebuilding. This is done with the intention of reducing human suffering and putting an end to violent conflict.

Ph.D. candidates in the field of peace studies are required to select a partner academic field in which to focus their study and coursework. These fields include anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and theology. The curriculum for peace studies incorporates these more traditional fields of study within the humanities and social sciences to produce an individualized learning environment for each individual learner. Additionally, students have access to a wide variety of research opportunities both within the Institute and throughout the rest of Notre Dame.

After graduating, students have the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to pursue a wide variety of academic, teaching, and professional vocations, including the following:

  • Academic roles that require interdisciplinary work;
  • Jobs that require specific knowledge and experience in the subfields of peace and conflict that are found in anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology, or theology; and
  • roles in intergovernmental, governmental, or nongovernmental organizations that combine academic research with practical experience

The University of Notre Dame is a private research institution that encompasses a total area of 1,265 acres and is located in South Bend, Indiana. This academic institution is consistently ranked among the nation’s most prestigious educational establishments. After being founded in 1842, Notre Dame did not acquire its official college charter until the following year, in 1844. The college conferred its first degrees for the first time in the year 1849.

This college, which is located in Notre Dame, Indiana, went through a period of great growth in the latter half of the 19th century. In 1917, a woman became the recipient of this university’s very first degree. This university has 190 buildings, and some of its most well-known departments, colleges, and schools are the College of Science, the Graduate School, the Keough School of Global Affairs, the Mendoza College of Business, the College of Arts and Letters, and the Keough School of Engineering. There is also a Law School, a Graduate School, and a Keough School of Global Affairs.

More than 12,000 students and more than 1,300 teaching staff members are enrolled in the university. The university’s most recent research includes studies on topics such as family conflict and the development of children, the mapping of genomes, the widening gap in trade between the United States and China, fluid mechanics, computational science and engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and online marketing trends.
