About the Scholarship:

The University of Glasgow was founded by papal edict in 1451. It is the fourth-oldest university in Scotland and the fourth-oldest institution in the United States. During the 18th century, it was a part of the Scottish Enlightenment, along with Edinburgh, St. Andrews, and Aberdeen. The University of Glasgow is one of the eight ancient universities in the United Kingdom that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in popular disciplines. The institution is divided into four colleges: the College of Science and Engineering, the College of Arts, the College of Medical, Veterinary, and Life Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences. The university is divided into several campuses. The primary campus, located in Hillhead, is the Gilmorehill campus. The Veterinary School, as well as the university’s sports facilities and dental school, are located on the Garscube Estate near Bearsden, while the medical section is located at Gartnavel Royal Hospital on Great Western Road. Furthermore, the Open University, the University of the West of Scotland, and the University of Glasgow collaborate to run the Crichton campus and the teaching center at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Dumfries. The University of Glasgow boasts 30,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 140 countries. With over 8,000 employees, including over 3,400 in research and education, it is a major employer in Glasgow. The institution is a member of the elite Russell Group of prominent research universities in the United Kingdom. Gilmorehill and Garscube are the main city campuses of the University of Glasgow. A third campus is located in Dumfries, which is located south of Glasgow. Both city campuses provide good access to the city center via frequent buses and the subway. Glasgow International Airport, Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, and two city center rail terminals provide quick access to the rest of the UK and the rest of the world. Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, has the highest student population in the country and is one of the top five most popular UK cities for visitors, according to the Office for National Statistics. Glasgow is one of Europe’s most lively cities, with a thriving social scene, superb shopping, vibrant theatres, and international festivals. According to Frommer’s and Condenaste Travel Guides, Glasgow is one of the top locations in Europe and one of the top two in the United Kingdom. The University also has more listed structures than any other university in the UK, and Sir George Gilbert Scott created the campus’s neo-Gothic main building. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Glasgow is the oldest in the United Kingdom, and it also houses Scotland’s only Department of Aerospace Engineering. The institution has established the World-Changing Alumni award to recognize remarkable alumni for their outstanding accomplishment. Susanne Mitschke won in 2017 and Matt Fountain won in 2016. Other famous alumni who are now well-known around the world include three Prime Ministers: Bonar Law, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, and William Lamb. Overseas students are assured a place in residence if they accept an unconditional offer to study and submit their entire application form before the year of admission deadline, which is normally in August. There are approximately 3,500 rooms in and around the city’s northwestern outskirts, the farthest of which is 45 minutes’ walk from the main campus.

The Accommodation Office can also help students find private rental housing in and around Glasgow. Private flats, shared residences, and lodgings are examples of these.

The main campus of the University of Glasgow is located in Glasgow’s multicultural West End, about three miles from the city center. Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and the friendliest in the world (Rough Guides 2019), and it was just named one of Time Out’s top ten “Best Cities in the World in 2019.” Glasgow is firmly established as one of Europe’s most active cities, with a plethora of cultural attractions, gorgeous architecture, plentiful parks and open spaces, wonderful shopping, and a year-round program of world class events and festivals. The Student Counselling and Advisory Service is part of the student support network and is available to all registered University of Glasgow students. When international students arrive at Glasgow Airport, the Welcome Team will greet them and direct them to free transportation to their new student residence. International Student Support also offers an orientation program prior to the start of the semester to assist international students in settling in. Incoming international students can also take pre-sessional English classes.
