Women scientists from science- and technology-lagging countries (STLCs) are eligible to apply for the OWSD PhD Fellowship 2022-2023, which will fund PhD research in natural, engineering, and information technology sciences. This fellowship includes a monthly stipend, visa costs, and a contribution to annual medical insurance. The program is managed with substantial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and is given in partnership with guest groups around the developing world.

The program is run with generous funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is delivered in collaboration with host institutes around the world. The fellowship program’s overall goal is to support the development of a new generation of female leaders in science and technology, as well as their effective participation in their nations’ scientific and technological growth.

The fellowship program’s precise goals are as follows:

1. To improve young and brilliant women graduates from STLCs’ access to educational and training opportunities in science and technology.
2. To boost women scientists’ scientific output and innovation in STLCs.
3. To encourage a new generation of bright women to pursue careers in science and technology leadership.
4. To encourage women scientists to contribute to their native countries’ long-term development.
5. Facilitate regional and international collaboration and networking among women scientists from the South.

Candidates have the option of choosing between two study plans:

A four-year full-time fellowship in which the research is carried out exclusively at a host institute in another developing country in the South.
A sandwich fellowship requires the candidate to be enrolled as a Ph.D. student in her home country while also studying in a host institute in another developing country.
The sandwich fellowship covers a minimum of one and up to three research visits to the host institute. The initial visit should last at least 6 months. The total number of months you can spend at the host institute is limited to 20. The funding period cannot exceed 4 years.

The sandwich option, which permits applicants to acquire their Ph.D. in their home country while gaining access to specialised researchers and equipment at the host institute, is particularly encouraged by OWSD.

About The Host

OWSD is the world’s first worldwide organization dedicated to boosting the role of women scientists in the development process and increasing their participation in scientific and technology leadership.

Young women scientists in the South can benefit from OWSD’s career development and networking possibilities. OWSD has over 5,000 members and is dedicated to enhancing the quantity and quality of women scientists in underserved nations and regions. Applicants must have an MSc or PhD in a scientific discipline to become full members. Regional workshops and programs, as well as national chapters and international conferences, provide networking possibilities. OWSD offers an all-expenses-paid PhD fellowship program for dedicated young women scientists, as well as an annual awards program (supported by The Elsevier Foundation and in collaboration with TWAS) to reward and celebrate women scientists’ early career accomplishment.

The Organization for Women’s Scientific Development (OWSD) was founded in 1987 as the first international forum to bring together eminent women scientists from both the developing and developed worlds with the goal of strengthening their role in development and increasing their representation in scientific and technological leadership.

OWSD provides research training, career development, and networking opportunities for women scientists at all phases of their careers in the developing countries.
