The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program began in October 2000, when the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated US$210 million to the University of Cambridge, making it the greatest single grant to a UK university. Each year, Gates Cambridge awards approximately 80 full-fee scholarships to outstanding applicants from outside the United Kingdom who wish to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge in any subject. PhD students will be eligible for about two-thirds of the grants, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 awards available in the international round. At any given moment, there are at least 225 Scholars from over 50 countries studying in Cambridge, who are spread across the University’s departments and Colleges, pursuing the full range of courses available. The objective of the Gates Cambridge Initiative is to create a global network of future leaders dedicated to improving people’s lives. It intends to accomplish this mission by identifying outstanding scholars, providing them with financial and non-financial support at one of the world’s top universities, and facilitating community building both within and outside of Cambridge.

About the Scholarship:

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world and is widely considered as one of the world’s top five institutions of higher learning. Affiliations include membership in the Russell Group, which is a network of research-intensive British institutions; the Coimbra Group, which is an alliance of top European universities; the League of European Research Universities; and the International Alliance of Research Universities. As a member of the “Golden Triangle,” which is a geographical concentration of prominent research universities, it is likewise considered a premier research institution. The Oxbridge Service can assist you in obtaining a place at Cambridge by rewriting your personal statement and giving expert interview preparation with an Oxbridge alumnus or current student .As a collegiate university, Cambridge is unique in that it does not have a physical campus, instead consisting of a group of 31 self-governing colleges that are united under the Cambridge flag. Each college is a component of the University of Cambridge while also remaining substantially autonomous. These individuals designate their own teaching staff and fellows in each topic, determine which students will be admitted, give supervisory teaching for undergraduates, and are responsible for the domestic arrangements as well as the wellbeing of both students and faculty. Choosing the correct college is critical, both in terms of ensuring that the student receives a place and in terms of ensuring that the degree is successful. To date, Cambridge has produced 89 Nobel Prize winners, more than any other university, and Trinity College alone has produced more Nobel Prize winners than the entire country of France. The University of Cambridge is also the third-largest landowner in the country, behind only the Queen and the Church of England, according to the Land Registry. Colleges serve as the primary point of contact for students, and their orientation procedures differ from one another. Student societies and voluntary alumni groups, in addition to the university, provide assistance by hosting fresher parties throughout the month of September to introduce students to one another and the campus environment. A program called International Student Orientation is held at the start of each academic year by the International Student Team to provide information about the university and the opportunity to meet other international students. The International Cambridge Students’ Union (iCSU) also represents international students at the University of Cambridge. The group greets new international students as soon as they arrive in the city, and social events are organized throughout the year to keep them connected. Cambridge University now has 1,300 international students from 65 different countries enrolled. Accommodation is provided by each college on an individual basis, and the quality varies greatly. Most colleges have their own houses and flats in Cambridge, and they are able to provide lodgings for undergraduates for the duration of their three years of study. The Lodgings Service is also ready to assist with the arrangement of privately rented accommodation in and around the city. Cambridge is a significant town in the county of Cambridgeshire, approximately 80 kilometers north of London. The university buildings, which have been a part of the town’s history for more than 800 years, are the most prominent feature. Given that Cambridge is a tiny city, practically all of the colleges and departments are located in close proximity to one another. They are connected by a bus service, and Cambridge is well-known for being one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the United Kingdom. Cambridge is served by four main airports: Stansted, Luton, Heathrow, and Gatwick. By car, the city is served by several smaller airports. There are National Express coach services to Cambridge from all four airports, as well as direct trains from London, which take around one hour to reach the city center.
