ABOUT THE CHEVENING SCHOLARSHIPS:

Chevening is the UK government’s international awards program aimed at developing world leaders since 1983. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organizations, Chevening offers two types of awards: Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships. The recipients of these awards are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions around the world.

Chevening provides a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from around the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and forge lasting positive relationships with the UK. Former scholars and fellows, from 1983 to the present, can reconnect with their classmates by joining the Chevening Community Platform.

The number of scholarships available varies from country to country. More than thirty scholarships are currently awarded to candidates from Nepal, India, and China. Twenty or more are awarded to candidates from Egypt, South Korea, Indonesia, Pakistan, Mexico, and Brazil, with fewer than five major scholarships available to candidates from Australia and Canada (US students are not eligible, but they may apply for Marshall Scholarships which are also funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office). The Chevening Scholarship is not available to non-Indigenous Australian candidates.

The importance of the Chevening Scholarship Scheme is based on its vast reach: approximately 700 scholarships are awarded each year to students from over 110 countries, enabling students from developing countries to access UK tertiary institutions, some of which are of a very high standard as determined by international rankings. In this way, the Chevening scheme is more similar to the US Fulbright Scholarships which bring students from 140 countries to the US, and differs from the Rhodes Scholarship scheme which currently allows applications from approximately 18 countries.
