Scholarship eligibility 

Before proceeding with the application, interested students must meet the qualification for the scholarship awards:

  • The scheme is available for research undertaken on either a full-time or part-time basis, subject to sufficient supervisory capacity.
  • Candidates are advised to contact potential supervisors to discuss the suitability of their proposal, and all candidates will undergo an interview as part of the selection process.
  • Distance learning applicants and those applying for a Ph.D. by Publication are not eligible for this scheme in the School of Arts and Humanities.
  • Applications from under-represented groups in postgraduate research are strongly encouraged, including women, LGBTQ+ candidates, Global Majority/BAME candidates, candidates with disabilities, candidates with caring responsibilities, and care leavers.
  • Candidates are generally expected to live within a commutable distance from the campus and be actively involved in the School’s research community.
  • Full-time students should dedicate 35 hours per week to their degree and should not be working full-time concurrently. Part-time students should expect to commit 17.5 hours per week to their degree.
  • Scholarship recipients are expected to contribute up to 6 hours per week (unpaid) towards activities such as teaching, research, public engagement, or administration.
  • It is advisable to design a project that can be completed within the standard time frame, as the Scholarship covers only standard time. Additional or writing-up time at the end of the research degree would be at the student’s expense.
  • Applicants should indicate their interest in the scheme on their application, as no separate application form is required. Those offered an award must enroll within the relevant application cycle (September 2023 or January 2024) and cannot defer beyond the January 2024 entry point.
