About the Sponsor:

Since the 1950s, the Colombo Plan and its successor scholarship initiatives have played a key role in advancing Australia’s foreign policy and development agendas in the Asia-Pacific region and in building relationships with regional leaders. There is strong agreement within Australia and the region on the value of scholarships as a means of promoting development and fostering relationships between Australia and the people of the region.

Scholarships promote political and economic reform and good governance in target countries while building an Australia of the people and our region’s development challenges. They enable regional leaders to develop lasting connections with Australia and enhance our reputation as an educational destination.

The Endeavor Scholarships and Fellowships were established in 2003 to showcase the excellence of Australia’s education sector and enable high-achieving students from around the world to undertake study or research in Australia and Australians to do the same abroad.

The Aim of Endeavor Postgraduate Scholarships and Fellowships

The aim of the Endeavor Scholarships and Scholarships is to provide individuals of academic merit with high-quality learning opportunities that contribute to Australia becoming a world leader in education and research.

The program supports Australia’s first National Strategy for International Education which sets out a 10-year plan to develop Australia’s role as a world leader in education, training, and research.

Since 2007, internationals have received a total of 4,481 fellowships and Endeavor fellowships and Australians have received 1,330 to pursue research, study or professional development in 127 eligible countries.

Endeavor Scholarship Funding

Funding for the Endeavor Fellowship and Scholarship Program is provided by the Australian Government.

The program typically offers three-quarters of the scholarships and fellowships funded each year to foreign nationals, with support ranging from short-term fellowships or research placements to full graduate degrees. Australians are supported to undertake targeted research and professional development abroad.

Endeavor Postgraduate Scholarship Support Services

To ensure that recipients get the most out of their experience, they will receive ongoing support throughout the fellowship or fellowship from Endeavor. Recipients will also be able to share their rides with other recipients around the world.

Upon successful completion, recipients will be eligible for membership in the Alumni Network. This network maintains the ties and personal, institutional, and educational friendships made. Global Outreach has been designated by the department to provide post-screening support services to recipients. These services include:

  • a dedicated case manager
  • pre-departure briefings
  • Advice on health, travel, insurance, accommodation, security, and legal matters.
  • payment of subsidies
  • Inform the department about the progress of the recipients.

Australian-American Fulbright Commission

In addition to the Scholarships and Endeavor Scholarships, the department works with the Australian-American Fulbright Commission to fund the Fulbright – Anne Wexler Master’s Scholarship in Public Policy which was announced by the Australian Government in 2009.

Two scholarships are awarded annually: one for an Australian citizen to pursue a two-year US Master of Public Policy and one for a US citizen to pursue a two-year Australian Master of Public Policy. These scholarships recognize the late Anne Wexler’s contribution to furthering Australia-US relations and are administered by the Australian-US Fulbright Commission in Canberra.

What’s new in Endeavor Postgraduate Scholarships and Fellowships?

The Australian Government has announced, as part of Budget 2022, the establishment of the Endeavor Leadership Program (ELP). This decision will merge the Endeavor Grants and Scholarships and the Endeavor Mobility Grants into a single streamlined ELP.

The ELP will continue to support two-way mobility for short- and long-term study, research, and career development opportunities. It will better target the delivery of previous Endeavor programs to ensure that overseas education, training, and research opportunities for Australia’s top-performing students, researchers, and professionals are sustainable into the future and aligned with the strategic priorities of the Australian government.
