About the Scholarship:

TU Wien stands for the phrase “Technology for People.” The Technical Institution of Vienna (TU Wien) is a research university, so it is obligated to provide the best possible standards for the transmission of information using the three-pronged approach of research, training, and innovation. In addition to this, we believe that it is our responsibility to strive for research excellence on a global scale. Each year, the 4,800 employees, 30,000 students, and 2,700 graduates of TU Wien contribute to society, give impetus for the economy in Austria, and help to bring about progress in general. Since its founding more than two centuries ago, the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) has been a driving force behind the production, dissemination, and furtherance of knowledge by serving as a magnet for the brightest and most original minds all throughout the academic value chain.

Research at TU Wien is recognized on a global scale, as evidenced by the institution’s placement among the top one hundred universities worldwide according to both the QS WorldUniversity Rankings and the THE Subject Rankings in 2016. The research initiatives carried out by the TU Wien are beneficial to society; in 2016, the TU Wien applied for 37 national and international patents, placing it among the top five most innovative companies in Austria. In 2016, the innovative research initiatives carried out by the TU Wien brought in a total of 88.8 million euros in third-party funding from the European Union (EU), the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), and private organizations.

Outstanding scientists have graduated from the Technical University of Vienna, including 18 recipients of grants from the European Research Council, 5 winners of Austria’s highest science award (the Wittgenstein Award), and 22 winners of Austria’s highest science award for those under the age of 35 (the START Award).

Through its 19 Christian Doppler Laboratories, Vienna Scientific Cluster phase 3 (the very latest high performance computing cluster), a plusenergy house, and many other projects carried out in collaboration with universities and research institutes in Austria and around the world, the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) brings science to a new level. TU Wien has close to 5,000 employees across the entire university, including professors, lecturers, scientific staff, and non-scientific personnel. These employees provide support for the approximately 30,000 students who are enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The institution handed out its first doctorates for the first time in the year 1902.

1987 was the year that saw the completion of the university library, which had been established in the same year as the university. It has open access sections, reading rooms, and 700 individual study stations spread out across its six stories. The Swiss artist and architect Bruno Weber is responsible for the design of the several owl sculptures that can be found around the structure. The sculptor Gero Schwanberg is responsible for the lion fountain that can be found on the ground level. Computational Science and Engineering, Quantum Physics and Quantum Technologies, Materials and Matter, Information and Communication Technology, and Environment are the TU Wien’s top research objectives. A number of notable individuals, such as the mathematician and physicist Christian Doppler (who discovered the Doppler effect), the architect Otto Wagner, the Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry Richard Zsigmondy, the composers Josef and Johann Strauß, and the first Austrian astronaut Franz Viehbock are among its former students.
