This PhD project is a part of the A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) program, which aims to create and study the high-temperature state of the strong interaction by using high-energy collisions of heavy lead ions. The quark-gluon plasma is the state of the strong interaction that results from these collisions (QGP). At CERN in Geneva, one of the experiments being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider is called ALICE. In your role as a PhD candidate, you participate in research initiatives that make use of so-called “hard probes.” These probes include the production of quarks and gluons with high momentum through collisions, which are then utilized to investigate the QGP. During the course of the projects, the interpretation and comprehension of the results are achieved by combining the analysis of the experimental data with model studies.

If you want to get your PhD, you should have a strong interest in fundamental physics (particle physics), and you should also have an affinity for large-scale data analysis, which includes statistical methods and the programming of analytic algorithms. Previous experience in a few of these areas is highly desirable and will be taken into consideration. You will be a part of the ALICE group over at GRASP, which stands for the Institute for Gravitation and Subatomic Physics, located at Utrecht University. Additionally, you will work closely with the ALICE group over at Nikhef.

Utrecht University has a total student body of over 30,000 people and has produced 12 Nobel prize winners. There are around 90 graduate programs (MSc and MA) and 12 undergraduate programs available to students at Utrecht University (BSc, BA, LLM). All of the courses are taught entirely in English, and they span a wide variety of subject areas in the academic world, such as the natural sciences, law, governance, life sciences, humanities, social sciences, and earth sciences.

Utrecht University has demonstrated its commitment to the ethical recruitment, selection, and mentoring of international students by becoming a signatory of the Dutch Code of Conduct (pdf). Because of its high quality of life and education, opportunities to work while studying, and a guaranteed one-year work visa upon graduation, with pathways to permanent employment, the Netherlands is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students. This trend is expected to continue in the foreseeable future.

Utrecht is a bustling student city located in the middle of the Netherlands. It provides a breathtaking and invigorating metropolitan backdrop that is full of creative individuals that have a lot of potential. Utrecht is well-known for its excellent bicycle infrastructure; in addition, the city’s small layout makes it simple to navigate. Students are able to navigate the city independently and safely, leaving them prepared to discover the myriad of fresh opportunities that lie around every turn. Utrecht is an intelligent city that leverages innovation and sustainability to confront new challenges and fulfill its aspirations. This is the city’s last point, but it is an important one. Utrecht was just just voted the region in Europe that is the most competitive as a result of its young and skilled labor force as well as a citywide effort to develop a society that is more environmentally friendly. Utrecht is considered to be one of the top 10 best-kept secrets in the world by Lonely Planet.

The student population of Utrecht is quite active, and it is comprised of a wide variety of organizations and societies run by students. You can explore your talents in the performing arts, take part in a creative workshop, or engage in other artistic endeavors at the Parnassos Cultural Centre, which is one of the many extracurricular activities that Utrecht University makes available to its students through its subsidiaries. In addition, the Utrecht Science Park Campus features the first-rate Olympos Sports Facilities, which can be utilized for both team sports and individual competitions.

Utrecht has a long and illustrious history that dates back approximately 2,000 years, as well as an architectural legacy that features structures that range from the very old to the very new. The ancient city center of Utrecht has been preserved in a considerable part, and it features gorgeous canals in addition to exquisite parks, cafes, and cultural facilities. The majestic Dom Tower is perched high above the city, and below it are cinemas, bars, and boutiques that contribute to Utrecht’s one-of-a-kind liveliness and spirit.
